This week, SOCMA members met with White House officials to oppose detrimental changes to the EPA’s TSCA New Chemicals Review Program. Some of the key issues that SOCMA and its members raised in the rule are: - EPA’s proposal to increase the already problematic oral suspension times from 15 to 30 days. - EPA’s proposal to restart the 90-day clock if a submitter provides additional information that EPA interprets to the subjective standard “known to or reasonably ascertainable by” the company. - The principle set by EPA’s proposal to deny PFAS chemistries for LoREXs and LVEs should be its free-standing rulemaking, not couched in a procedural rule. -The proposed up-front data requirements. Representatives from ProChem Inc., Colonial Chemical, Inc., Milliken Chemical, and Boulder Scientific Company emphasized how these changes would hinder innovation and competitiveness in U.S. specialty chemicals. Have you checked out the SOCMA Q2 Pulse Poll yet? Our latest industry snapshot reveals some intriguing trends regarding the state of specialty chemical manufacturing. - Growth on the Horizon: Nearly 40% of companies are projecting expansion in both contract and proprietary manufacturing. This optimism is tempered with caution, but the signs are promising. - Onshoring Gains Momentum: We're seeing a significant uptick in onshoring and nearshoring projects. 24% of respondents are now actively pursuing these initiatives, up from 14% earlier this year. This shift has the potential to provide significant opportunities for our industry. - Capacity and Workforce: While most manufacturers report ample space availability, about a quarter are operating at near-full capacity. This tightening is driving an interesting trend: many companies are looking to expand their workforce by 20-50% to meet future growth targets. Talent acquisition is continuing to be a key focus. - Market Dynamics: Energy/Electronics, Pharma, Agro, and CASE (coatings, adhesives, sealants, elastomers) are leading the charge, accounting for 76% of the most active market segments. These sectors are driving innovation and demand across the industry. - The Road Ahead: Despite regulatory challenges, there's a palpable sense of optimism for #NorthAmericanManufacturing. Our members are adapting, innovating, and positioning themselves for future growth. At SOCMA, we're committed to supporting this growth and fostering innovation in the #specialtychemical sector. We'd love to hear your thoughts on these trends. How are they playing out for your company? Read more in the full report: https://lnkd.in/eSuCEja3
