Have you ever wondered what it would be like to visit a museum after hours? Teens participating in the National 4-H Council's "True Leaders in Equity" program got the chance to visit the National Museum of Natural History this past week and had the museum all to themselves! Educators from the Smithsonian Office of the Under Secretary for Education and the National Museum of Natural History made this experience a truly memorable one--complete with activity stations that helped illuminate key concepts from the exhibitions, opportunities for discussion with experts across scientific fields to learn more about the wide range of careers, and hands-on crafts to support the teens' creative side. Special thanks to the educators, volunteers, and interns who helped make the museum come alive during the program. 4-H Smithsonian Night at the Museum is generously supported by the Darlene Bookoff Endowment. Excited to showcase this educational resource from the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center (APAC) Co-Creation project we facilitated this past year! We're presenting with APAC and teacher Annie Nguyen at the Smithsonian National Education Summit on Tuesday, July 16th at 12-12:50pm ET. Annie and the Asian American Resource Center of Austin, TX developed this zine that highlights a local AANHPI story. Learn about the co-creation process and the stories highlighted by other cohorts from around the US. All resources developed are freely available for teachers to use in their classrooms. In July 2023, the Smithsonian Institution and Boys & Girls Clubs of America announced an exciting new partnership between the two organizations. The partnership has included curated museum tours for Club members from across the country visiting Washington, D.C., as well as a pilot program focused on topics in history, social justice, and civic engagement co-created by Club staff and museum educators and tested by Club teens. On Wednesday, July 17, at 6:00pm, ET, Boys and Girls Club Youth Leaders from Virginia, Montana, and Alabama will share their insights about the ways the Clubs have prepared them with leadership skills and a passion for community engagement. The panel will be moderated by Under Secretary for Education, Monique M. Chism Ph.D as part of the 2024 Smithsonian National Education Summit preceding a networking reception for educators.
