I got my startup its first thousand users by handing out 25,000 Squid Game-themed business cards. When I first launched Simplify in October of 2021, getting our first users was extremely tough. We had a hard time convincing job seekers to sign up for what seemed like “just another job site” and we didn't have the money to run paid ads. After watching Squid Game on Netflix, I had the idea of printing out business cards from the show with our branding on the back – and sliding them under doors on college campuses in the middle of the night. The vision was to capitalize on the virality of the show to get some eyeballs on our site. My cofounders and I drove to over a dozen colleges to sneak into dorms and slide over 25,000 business cards under doors. It was time-consuming and our backs hurt for days – but it was exactly the type of jumpstart we needed to get our platform off the ground. Today, Simplify has grown to help over half a million users discover and apply to 35 million jobs - and we’re still firm believers in scrappy growth strategies like this one! 🚀🚀

Quick PSA: The number of applicants you see on LinkedIn’s Job Posts ARE NOT actual applicants who APPLIED. This means that jobs that say “over 100 applicants” could be much less. That # is only able to tell if people clicked on the link to apply, regardless if they submitted their application. As most of you know, I've been applying for full-time jobs for after my current contract ends. Online applications are kind of tedious. You have to enter the same information on every site in a slightly different form. I just found and have started using Simplify. It's a free browser extension that has a fantastic resume builder and can fill in all of the info automatically on job websites. It has saved me hours of time! After 17 years in statistics and engineering, I've made a big career change. Ten years into my job as a biostatistician, I realized that I had lost the joy of my work. What I did love was the process of building and managing great teams. But I still felt trapped at my job, and too old to job hop. In late 2019, I took a small jump and started freelance recruiting (part-time). During this time, I started contract work with Simplify, helping companies discover undertapped engineering talent. With some encouragement from the founders (who were more than half my age), I'm proud to announce that I've moved into a full-time recruiter role. This journey has taught me a few things: - It's never too late to change your career path. - Following your passion can lead to unexpected opportunities. - The right support can make all the difference. - Connecting people with their potential is incredibly fulfilling.
