Shimmick is proud to partner with USACE Nashville District and thrilled with our project team’s dedication to this incredible project!
Did you know? More than 300,000 cubic yards of concrete are being used to construct the new 110-foot by 600-foot Chickamauga Lock, enough concrete to build a two-lane road from Chattanooga to Nashville. To keep the quality of the concrete consistent, concrete batch plants were constructed on site, the largest of which can mix up to 200 cubic yards an hour. Concrete, when mixed, creates an exothermic reaction, which must be carefully managed to prevent cracking after it is placed. To keep the heat manageable, the materials are cooled to 45 degrees Fahrenheit before mixing and the conveyor system in the batch plant has its own cooling system as well. Over 50,000 gallons of cement is stored on time in addition to other materials to help prevent any disruptions in production due to supply chain shortages. 📸 Lee Roberts #Construction #USACE #NashvilleCorps
