Nico Dekens (Dutch_OsintGuy) breaks down a very timely Joint Cybersecurity Advisory co-authored by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Cyber National Mission Force, Netherlands General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD), Netherlands Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD), the Netherlands Police (DNP), and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS). In this episode of the ShadowDragon Podcast, Nico goes over how Russian propagandists are creating false narratives using '#Meliorator', a generative AI enabled tool to pump out not only false messaging, but mimic human behavior online to bypass social media detection. Those narratives are then fed to Russian state media like RT and broadcast as 'news'. #OSINT has a huge role in detecting false narratives and disinformation. On July 2, 1776, just days before America declared her Independence, General George Washington gave General Orders that included lines meant to boost the morale and set the scene for what is now our Great Nation: "Let us therefore animate and encourage each other, and shew the whole world, that a Freeman contending for Liberty on his own ground is superior to any slavish mercenary on earth." After the battle of Yorktown, Marquis de Lafayette, a French aristocrat who fought directly under General Washington, said of the victory: “Humanity has won its battle. Liberty now has a country.”

Open-Source Intelligence (#OSINT) has been around for a long time, most prominently displayed within the WWII Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Research and Analysis (R&A) division, whose best achievements were its exploitation of open sources alongside secret ones. 'Open sources' have been inconsequential when taken as a single source, but viewed holistically can be a windfall for governments or multinational companies seeking to mitigate risk. This holistic approach was on full display during a Combined Military exercise in December of 2023, where the "US Army Europe Open Source Center (AEOSC)—the OSINT cell of the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade (Theater)—hosted partners in Wiesbaden for a working group to define and direct collection requirements." OSINT has been elevated as the "INT of first resort" in a world that is both more dangerous and increasingly online. The publicly available information (#PAI) produced by combatants and non-combatants alike result in intelligence windfalls that OSS leader General 'Wild Bill' Donovan and the OSS would have (maybe, quite literally) killed for in a time of war. As one Latvian Captain in a recent Modern War Institute at West Point said about OSINT, "'It's not my work. It is my existence.'" The authors of the article, Christina Bembenek and Chels Michta, PhD talk about the workflow and sharing capabilities: "For example, when a partner stumbled across a Telegram post by a Ukrainian milblogger that listed towns where Russian forces were alleged to be unloading equipment, he passed the locations to a member of his team currently serving in a cyber defense unit. Using a Python script he developed, the programmer-turned-intel officer was able to extract usernames and photos associated with Telegram accounts in the area. (Several photos featured soldiers posing in uniform, their unit patches clearly visible.) The partner plugged the usernames into other Russian social media platforms to gather more information before passing the photos to another colleague who proceeded to geolocate some of the buildings. After performing additional searches, the partner discovered videos of the same unit in three of the identified locations, corroborating his colleagues’ earlier findings. With this information, the team was able to map the logistical and transit routes taken by units moving toward Kharkiv." "By leveraging partners’ complementary strengths—whether regional knowledge, language ability, or access to specialized tools—Northern Raven created powerful synergies.
