Today, the City of Seattle recognizes Juneteenth to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The name recognizes June 19, 1865—the day that news of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and executive order freeing all persons held as slaves (signed two years earlier) finally reached Galveston, Texas. While the day has been celebrated ever since, and recognized as a federal holiday, June 19th became a City holiday in 2022. Join us in celebrating freedom and the resilience of the Black community at one of the many Juneteenth celebrations happening around the city!
