Love, Hope & Life

About us

Seattle's Union Gospel Mission is a nonprofit ministry that loves and cares for our homeless neighbors throughout greater Seattle. We started in 1932 to feed and care for those suffering from the Great Depression. From a simple, borrowed soup kettle, we now love and care for thousands of homeless and hurting people each day. Our mission is to bring the love of Jesus and hope for a new life to our homeless neighbors. Our vision is to see every homeless neighbor — beloved, redeemed, restored. We address root causes and break the cycle of homelessness by meeting urgent physical needs, building relationships, and offering long-term recovery programs. Our efforts work to restore dignity and help move people to healthy, thriving lives. We want everyone to know, no matter their circumstances, they are loved and cared for, by us and by God.

  • Annette was trapped in prostitution at the age of 14, after running away from home with a man who promised to take care of her. For 13 years, she lived in fear and shame until one of her sisters became a Christian and began praying for her. “I think those were seeds being planted in my life,” recalls Annette. Annette remembers crying out to God one night from jail. “I got on my knees, and I prayed because I was scared. ‘If you get me out of this...’ I just prayed. My pimp came to pick me up so he could take me back out to prostitution, but when I looked at him there was no fear.” Annette was miraculously delivered from the fear and lies that had kept her trapped in this destructive relationship! When Annette came to the Mission's Shelter and Recovery Program for women and children, she knew immediately that she was supposed to be there. “God showed me, 'I have not even begun to do the work that I need to do in you' — which was healing from the inside out, with my family, with myself, and how it relates to relationships. My life now is so much different.” After graduating from our recovery program, Annette found restoration in her family and relationships. She took a job at the Mission, and is now the Director of our new Women and Children's Shelter, where she helps other women who struggle with the issues she once faced. #GiveBIG and help bring lasting change to people like Annette. Partner with us by giving at https://hubs.li/Q02wsfgZ0 while our $25,000 Challenge Grant is in effect! Ends MIDNIGHT tonight.

  • As an adult, Jeff battled methamphetamine addiction for nearly a decade. “I was raised well, I had great parents,” Jeff says. “I didn't have an excuse, I felt a lot of shame for that. I was a different person. I became a liar, a thief — very deceitful, very needy. I used people.” While at the Mission, Jeff says he had “a chance to heal not only physically, but mentally. Every day got better and better." Today, he works as an engineering solutions manager for a recruitment company. “I'm a genuine contributing human in our society, that's actually providing, giving back, helping people get jobs and I love it,” Jeff says. "I don't know why God has given me the grace and mercy He has. I do not deserve any of it, but I want to honor it. I am blessed and happy.” Last day to #GiveBIG! Help provide a path for the lost to be found — give while the $25,000 Challenge Grant is in effect at https://hubs.li/Q02wscr90. Ends MIDNIGHT tonight.
