Science 🤝 Community The residents of King Salmon, a coastal community in California, regularly experience flooding due to sea-level rise. A California Sea Grant-funded study found that community members are already creating their own strategies to deal with the changes. These findings underline the importance of engaging with local communities for creating effective climate adaptation strategies, as it helps uncover valuable, often overlooked knowledge about local conditions and needs. This week, teachers set sail on Lake Erie for science! 🛳️ Through the Shipboard Science Workshop, educators work alongside researchers on the @EPA R/V Lake Guardian for a hands-on experience to bring back to the classroom. They’re exploring microplastics, phytoplankton, sediment and more. 🔬 Read about some of the educators onboard from @OhioSeaGrant: bit.ly/OH-SS-2024 @MISeaGrant: bit.ly/MI-SS-2024 @newyorkseagrant: bit.ly/NY-SS-2024 @PASeaGrant: bit.ly/PA-SS-2024 #SeaGrant #EPA #GreatLakes #LakesAppreciationMonth #LakeErie #Teachers #Educators #HandsOn #Education #Classroom #ProfessionalDevelopment #Research #Science #Environment

S.C. Sea Grant Consortium’s Marine Debris: From Micro to Macro educator workshop is devoted to exploring marine debris, specifically plastics and microplastics. Through hands-on activities, field-based excursions, presentations, and group discussions, participants will explore topics such as the physical properties of plastics, the formation and impacts of microplastics, research on current and emerging issues, and stewardship opportunities. Participants will have the chance to assist in the creation of a brand-new marine debris education kit and curriculum that will be piloted during the 2024-2025 school year. This two-night, three-day workshop is offered free of charge to any K-12 formal or nonformal educator. Most meals and lodging will be provided free of charge at the cottages and dorms at Hobcaw Barony in Georgetown, S.C. Participants will be eligible for 15 renewal credits. All workshop slots have currently been filled, but a waitlist is available. Please reach out to E.V. Bell, Marine Education Specialist, at mailto:elizabeth.bell@scseagrant.org to join the waitlist. #SeaGrant #MarineDebris #SouthCarolina #Microplastics #Plastics #PlasticFreeJuly #Education #Workshop
