Considering layoffs? Consider how they might disproportionately affect minorities. Studies show that post-layoff, many companies show a dip in women and underrepresented employees, likely due to an unconscious bias that leads managers to retain people who are like them. People who are perceived as difficult for health reasons, frequent family issues requiring flexible schedules, and neurodivergent thinkers are also usually among the first to be let go. One way to make lay-off less biased is to be clear about why lay-offs are happening. If it is based on the closure of a department or project, be clear that the positions, not the people are being eliminated. If it is a general cost cutting across all departments, were criteria drawn up in advance of considering who to lay off? Are these criteria objective? Are they performance based? Were opportunities given that allowed potentially affected employees some choice? For example, offering to reduce hours, take early retirement, or transfer to a more mission critical position? For those who are laid-off, have you provided them with jobseeking and career planning support? If not, it's not too late. Scismic can help.

87% of surviving workers say they are less likely to recommend their organization as a great place to work after layoffs. Unless... The layoffs are handled well. If affected employees are treated with respect and compassion, and given fair severance packages, and existing employees feel appreciated and invested in, you can actually improve how past and present employees feel about the company. If you want help ensuring that your layoffs go as well as can be expected, contact Scismic.
