About us

Save The Bay is the largest regional organization working to protect and restore San Francisco Bay for people and wildlife. We are the voice of the Bay and for almost 60 years, Save The Bay has inspired people to advocate for a clean and healthy Bay. In this era of climate change and a growing population, we work with scientists and policymakers to protect the Bay as our region's most important natural resource--essential to our environment, economy, and quality of life.

Last month, members of our Habitat Restoration Team (HRT) spent the day enjoying a workday with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (GGNPC) Stewardship Staff! Recently, HRT has been collaborating with other environmental organizations in swap workdays. During these days, HRT is either hosting or being hosted by another org that does similar stewardship work to Save The Bay. These days are impactful as we build community while learning about the different ways other organizations are engaging in restoration. At this swap, teams arrived on Alcatraz Island early in the morning and learned about the deep history of the land. HRT and GGNPC Stewardship Staff had the opportunity to connect with one another and learn about each other’s work all while sifting through compost and taking a tour of the Alcatraz Historic Gardens. Staff saw nesting cormorants, baby seagulls, banana slugs, and more beautiful wildlife! Later in the day, HRT toured the Occupation of Alcatraz exhibit, deepening our knowledge of the history of colonial land acquisition in the Bay Area. This was a great opportunity for HRT and GGNPC Stewardship Staff to spend a day learning and enjoying each other’s company through the work we do! 💥 Big win for the Bay! 💥 On Wednesday night, the CA Legislature voted to put a $10b Climate Bond on the November ballot. This bond is a historic investment in climate adaptation and will help prevent devastating flooding, drought, wildfires, and extreme heat. As we’re seeing this week, there’s no time to wait. Its time for a #ClimateBondNow ✅ Save The Bay appreciates the leadership of Senate President Pro Tem Senator Mike McGuire, Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas and members who worked hard to get this done. Special thanks to our own Asm. Diane Papan for her efforts to ensure robust coastal resilience and sea level rise funding in the final bill.

“If approved by voters on Nov. 5, the bond would constitute California’s biggest single climate investment in history and be the nation’s largest-ever voter-approved climate measure.” Our efforts have to match the scale of the challenge we face. Save The Bay has been working to support this historic climate bond, and we’re now closer than ever to getting it on the November ballot. As the state swelters under dangerous heat, it’s time for the legislature and Governor Newsom to commit to protecting our communities from climate catastrophe and pass the #ClimateBondNow. It is officially Plastic Free July! As a part of the global movement to limit the use of single-use plastics, we wanted to highlight a California policy measure that is intended to continue to reduce our reliance on these unnecessarily wasteful and harmful products. In 2014, Save The Bay helped to pass the original plastic bag ban. Ten years later, we are hopeful that another set of bills (AB 2236/SB 1053) will close loopholes in the original law and enforce its initial intent. These bills would ban grocery and some retail stores from providing any kind of plastic film bags, including currently exempted thicker plastic bags which are a significant source of waste in California. Plastics, from production to disposal, are incredible harmful to the environment and human health. We hope to show strong support for this bill from the Bay Area and help to reduce our reliance on single-use plastics. You can read more about the bill here: https://lnkd.in/gxXhfeRy

At this year's State of the Estuary Conference, our Native Nursery Manager Millie presented "Cultivating Community Through Affinity Based Volunteer Programming", discussing their development of affinity volunteer programs at Save The Bay. Millie launched the initiative in January 2023 and has since been directing programs for members of the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color), LGBTQ+ and QTPOC (Queer/Trans People of Color) communities. Affinity based volunteer programs offer a way to address a lack of diversity in the community science space and provide an opportunity for folks with shared identities to participate in community based land stewardship. Millie highlighted their work partnering with Latino Outdoors and Justice Outside, organizations that are already deeply involved in equity based work in the environmental sector. They shared the tangible impact of affinity based volunteerism in fostering community within green spaces. One affinity volunteer member said: "Millie is one of the most amazing people I've met! They made caring for plantitas and habitat restoration such a wonderful time in every stage I've been fortunate enough to experience. They're also directly responsible for my forming of life-long friendships with other awesome folks as a result of them starting the BIPOC affinity events." Thank you Millie for your amazing work! We are excited to continue to support and uplift this incredible program.🌿❤️

Today’s budget announcement confirmed deep cuts to critical climate resilience programs, including funding for coastal resilience and sea level rise protections. There is still a way to make progress on equitable climate resilience if the legislature and governor agree to pass a #ClimateBondNow. Climate change won’t wait for better budget years, so we can’t afford to delay funding for wildfire, drought, heat, and flooding protections. We need Governor Gavin Newsom, Senator Mike McGuire, and Robert Rivas to lead on climate and put a climate bond on the November ballot.

This May, Save The Bay's Restoration Engagement Specialist Daniella Perez Garcia and Education Program Coordinator Haymar Lim presented "Fostering Belonging through Environmental Education" at The 2024 State of the Estuary Conference. Since 1998, we have partnered with teachers across the Bay Area to educate and inspire young people to become lifelong stewards of estuarine ecosystems. As an organization actively working to restore Bay habitat, Save The Bay has the rare opportunity to bring students from the communities with the greatest sea level rise risk out to the shoreline where they can take part in habitat restoration, making a real difference in protecting their communities. Daniella and Haymar discussed how we engage students outdoors and our priorities to improve access by providing programs to frontline, underserved communities. Most recently, the percentage of underserved students in our education programs is over 70%. Save The Bay’s environmental education aims to give youth the confidence and resources they need to continue taking space and fostering their curiosity about nature, the outdoors, and their impact on their environment.
