Work is progressing on the new academic building at the Young Women's Leadership Academy. Last week, workers were preparing to pour the concrete slab for the part of the building that will become the new library and Robotics Lab. A new administration/academic building, two new gyms and related athletic facilities are also planned for the all-girls school. It was quite a year for St. Philip's College ECHS, SAISD student Leah Hernandez. The rising 10th grader collected funds and in-kind donations to place more than 300 LEGO kits in the hands of kindergarten, first and second graders at five schools across the district. Leah’s last two events, at Douglass Elementary, SAISD and Margil Elementary, SAISD, also featured volunteers from her high school as well as Lanier High School, City Year, and San Antonio Police Department.   The program grew rapidly throughout the year, bolstered by generous donations Hernandez received from the Texas Diaper Bank.   “When I started out, I had big hopes to bring resources to young scholars,” Hernandez said. “I was lucky to have so many people support me this year to make this possible. This gives me hope that by year four together as a community we will have inspired more scholars in the STEM field than I ever thought was possible.”    As the program grew, SAISD Family and Community Engagement department began to collaborate with Leah’s project, creating Family Hours around the LEGO distribution events.   The FACE Family Hour team kicks off the event by engaging families with a literacy session. The session connects students and families to the importance of reading by modeling what literacy support looks like at home using the reading guides. Families receive grade-level-appropriate books for all their students enrolled in SAISD paired with a reading guide.   “Having the support of family engagement has shown me that my school district cares about my personal goals and what I’m doing for other young scholars,” Hernandez said. “I’m looking forward to bringing more LEGO kits to more students next year.” #saisd #saisdproud #saisdfamilia #innovation #learning #students #schools #teachers

Renovation of Brackenridge High School's boys' south gym and related athletic areas is expected to begin in July. The construction team recently took a pre-demolition tour of the renovation site, including the gym, weight room, film room, locker room and other spaces. These athletic areas are part of the larger scope of improvements for the high school. “What’s really big is the confirmation that I’m a good teacher,” said Jill Ruiz. “It’s reenergized me, and to be rewarded for all your hard work, that’s outstanding.” Ruiz is one of 286 SAISD teachers selected to receive bonus pay through the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA). Educators are designated as Recognized, Exemplary or Master teachers. As a Master teacher, Ruiz will receive a stipend between $7,000 and $25,100. Trustees approve 2% general pay increase for 2024-25 The San Antonio ISD Board of Trustees approved a 2% general pay increase for all full-time, permanent employees during a specially called board meeting on June 10. The board also voted on increasing entry pay for teachers, while also increasing stipends and elevating pay grades for specific positions and increasing staffing for mental health initiatives. As Fox Tech High School nears the end of the Construction Documents phase, last week SAISD Construction and Development Services hosted a Design Review meeting. During the meeting, department leaders and trades experts within the district carefully review the documents and provide feedback for the project architects and engineers. The goal is to ensure the construction documents meet governing industry codes, SAISD's Technical Design Guidelines and Educational Specifications, as well as district policy. With school out for the summer, #Bond2020 work is moving along at Longfellow Middle School. Work is progressing on the new competition and secondary gyms (shown in video clip). Also this week, wall framing and sheathing were underway in the main academic building. A portion of the renovated academic building is expected to be ready for move-in in September, with work continuing on other parts of the building.
