Last Wednesday, June 5, C4ISRNET held its annual conference. In this conference, many military, government, and industry leaders discussed the current state of CJADC2, how it can be improved, and what factors should be considered when discussing CJADC2 and its implementation. REDCOM's Director of Strategy, John Kelliher, spoke during the Industry Chat section of the State of JADC2 Panel. During this section, John used his experience in the Air Force and at REDCOM to explain what he believes are the most important and often overlooked factors needed for promoting CJADC2 and interoperability implementation.    https://lnkd.in/ewEVWhf8 https://lnkd.in/eziJAuse

In May, REDCOM announced the Sigma Client plug-in for the Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK). ATAK is a smartphone app that provides real-time communications, data sharing, and navigation in one easy-to-use interface. The Sigma plug-in provides warfighters with voice channels, offering communication avenues across any combination of endpoints, from radios and MANETs to IP phones and softphones. Sigma Client for ATAK works with both full-duplex and half-duplex communications via an embedded soft PTT button and works seamlessly with existing tactical PTT and headset hardware. Recently, REDCOM attended a Joint Interagency Field Experimentation (JIFX) event to verify the operational capability of the ATAK plugin and its interoperability with the MPU5, Persistent System's MANET radio. JIFX is hosted by the Naval Postgraduate School and aims to provide opportunities for "..NPS faculty, students, private companies, and academia to demonstrate and evaluate new technologies related to the Department of the Navy and the Department of Defense research in an operational field environment, and also to provide the operational community the opportunity to experiment with these technologies to better understand the capabilities that they may represent." To learn more about JIFX and the Naval Postgraduate School, visit their website. Testing was successful, proving that the Sigma Client for ATAK plugin is operational and properly interoperates with the MPU5. Devices running ATAK with the Sigma plugin were able to place calls through a trunk and were functioning in a contingent environment. While a 2-way communication was established with Sigma Client for ATAK, further development and testing will continue to deliver warfighters a complete C2 application for communication at the tactical edge.

In his article, Lt. Gen. James Terry (Ret.) stresses the importance of U.S. and partner nation leaders improving decision-making capabilities to combat Gray Zone tactics in the first island chain. A significant point is how “edge computing and network solutions…allows joint and service planners to realize scalable decision-making advantages for agile basing and contested logistics missions while assuring communications in denied/degraded environments and enhancing intelligence collection capabilities.” Edge computing and networks will be critical for establishing a decision-making advantage during joint force operations. Another crucial aspect will be device interoperability. Edge computing and networks will provide decision-makers with the information but not necessarily the means to distribute it to the people who will carry out the actions. By creating an interoperable communications network alongside edge computing capabilities, decision-makers can communicate more efficiently across Joint Force Domains and down echelons to subordinate units. A functional comms ecosystem will also enable adjacent communications for the subordinate units, improving operational efficiency without the use of liaison officers or representatives (LNOs), or complex setups for radio operators.    Similar to the position in our CJADC2 post, using AI and edge computing will only improve data compilation and analysis; it will not improve the flow of information. Any information gained from AI or edge computing is useless if decision-makers cannot access or properly communicate the orders derived from the data. Interoperable communication networks in joint force operations will enable faster action and reaction across domains and laterally through echelons, allowing leaders to maintain the information advantage by reducing action and reaction time through effective communication channels. https://lnkd.in/e_HFgEq6
