July is Freedom Month and this week we’re hauling you all the way back to 1776. 🚚 Back then, the King's Highway connected Charleston, South Carolina to Boston, spanning a network of 10,000 miles of roads. Established in the 1660s during Charles II’s reign, it facilitated commerce and mail delivery along the Atlantic coast. Big rigs of the day were pulled by horses or mules, roadside inns served as truck stops, though ale was probably more common than coffee. Interestingly, this highway also played a crucial role in the Revolutionary War, aiding George Washington’s troops in their surprise attack on the British at Yorktown. After the war, the road became part of the United States. Today, US 1 and US 20 trace much of the old route, with remnants visible at the King’s Highway Historic Site in Prince William, Virginia.
