July is Freedom Month and this week we’re hauling you all the way back to 1776. 🚚 Back then, the King's Highway connected Charleston, South Carolina to Boston, spanning a network of 10,000 miles of roads. Established in the 1660s during Charles II’s reign, it facilitated commerce and mail delivery along the Atlantic coast. Big rigs of the day were pulled by horses or mules, roadside inns served as truck stops, though ale was probably more common than coffee. Interestingly, this highway also played a crucial role in the Revolutionary War, aiding George Washington’s troops in their surprise attack on the British at Yorktown. After the war, the road became part of the United States. Today, US 1 and US 20 trace much of the old route, with remnants visible at the King’s Highway Historic Site in Prince William, Virginia.

It would be hard to find many truckers who prefer a sleeper cab over their bed at home. Even so, the idea has come a long way since it was rolled out in the 1920s. The nickname "coffin boxes" for the first sleeper cabs speaks volumes. They were cramped metal boxes that fit between the driver’s seat and the back wall of a slightly extended cab. Another similar idea was a cabinet under the floor beneath the cab, which had its own entrance below the driver’s door. Even if claustrophobia wasn’t a problem in these modified tool boxes, safety concerns were. The early, after-market models offered little to no protection in the event of an accident, causing drivers and trucking companies to make continual improvements through the years. Freightliner is credited with rolling out the first production-model sleeper cabs in 1953 and soon the government issued regulations designed to turn the coffins into the safer, relatively comfortable spaces we know today.
