💡 Let's face the facts, LGBTQ+ youth experience sexual violence at higher rates than the general population. The Trevor Project found that nearly two in five LGBTQ+ young people (39%) reported that they had ever been forced to do “sexual things” that they did not want to do. Rates of forced sexual contact in the past year among LGBTQ+ young people were higher than those in the general population of young people in the U.S. Nearly half of LGBTQ+ young people ages 13-18 (49%) reported that they had been forced to do “sexual things” that they did not want to do in the past 12 months, compared to only 11% of the general population of 13-18 year olds in the U.S. Respondents who reported ever having experienced forced sexual contact were also asked specifically about forced sexual intercourse, with 45% reporting forced sexual intercourse. This data is heart wrenching and demonstrates the need for increased resources and support for this community. Our volunteers at the National Sexual Assault Hotline get thousands of chats and calls every month. For Hotline volunteers like Brittany, RAINN’s thorough training gave her the skills to effectively support survivors and their loved ones. “The training RAINN provides is essential because it's one thing to want to volunteer,” said Brittany, “but it's another thing to feel fully equipped to handle such a task.” One of Brittany’s biggest training takeaways was that not every conversation needs to be solution-oriented. “Every visitor has different needs. This week, the whole country chose to #ActWithRAINN. Championing change, survivors and RAINN staff from across the United States advocated on Capitol Hill for the passage of federal anti-sexual violence legislation. Each survivor shared their story, and shared their names, not only to represent themselves, but to represent all the survivors who could not be there with us.
