Even though this phenomenon rarely occurs, it is possible – Nickel sulfide (NiS) inclusions in glass.🧐 All float glass can have some level of inclusions and NiS is one such inclusion. Nickel Sulfide inclusions can occur if nickel-rich particles are present in the raw materials during the raw glass manufacturing process. 🏭 Nickel Sulfide is “activated” during the tempering process. The result of NiS inclusions can have a delayed “activation”. When glass is exposed to extreme heating (like sunlight on a building) or fast temperature change. The NiS can expand and cause spontaneous glass breakage.💣 Should the glass remain in the frame, you can pinpoint the inclusion that started the breakage by finding the pieces of broken glass that together create a butterfly shape.🦋 Heat soak testing simulates these heating and cooling conditions while the glass is in the fabrication facility, to identify and eliminate any glass risk of breakage of the original order. Heat soak testing is called a destructive test. Tempered glass is heated to approximately 555oF for a period specified in the EN14179 standard. Close to 99% of glass panes with inclusions will be identified and suffer fracture. It is important to think about the cost of replacing a piece of glass on the top floor of a building in a metropolitan city. The replacement of that single piece of glass can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. For glazing contractors and architects, opting for this additional testing means greater peace of mind and saving money. ✨Press Glass process engineer, Chad, gives an inside look at internal engineering operations.✨ ✅A Press Glass process engineer's primary responsibility is to optimize and streamline the glass fabrication process to ensure maximum efficiency, quality, and safety by analyzing data, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing solutions to enhance our capabilities. ✅How do you increase efficiency in production? Efficiency in production stems from ongoing efforts, including continuous improvement initiatives, automation, process optimization, and employee training. We use Lean Manufacturing principles and analyze collected data to make informed decisions, improving efficiency and productivity. ✅How do you handle a disruption of the production process? Typically, our maintenance team handles the preventative maintenance and repairs for malfunctioning machinery. In certain instances, the Engineering team will be involved in the troubleshooting process or find another way to produce outside of the normal. ✅How does Press Glass navigate fabricating unusual and unique orders? We have to take a different approach for order approval. Multiple departments collaborate to ensure not only our capability to fabricate the order, but also, the quality of the final product. If we cannot produce the order as requested, then we will present alternatives. ✅What is the method for creating/implementing a new process for fabricating a new product? Implementing something new at Press Glass involves understanding the requirements, constructing a feasibility analysis, and designing the manufacturing process. Then we create a prototype and go through various testing and quality measures. If a certification is required a sample is sent for testing. Post-launch, the product and its process is monitored for potential improvements. ✅Does Press Glass use AI in our processes? Yes, it is used to optimize anything from production to quality control.
