People are always talking about millions of dollars being invested into climate action, but have you ever stopped to wonder how that money is being used? Lately, on our social media, we’ve been talking about the importance of impact investments on the climate 🌎. Impact investments are defined as investments made to create value, both financially and socially, and can be an important tool when fighting climate change 🌱. If you’re interested in learning more about how impact investing can usher in a greener future 🌲, you can keep an eye on our Instagram and TikTok, where we’re posting bite-sized videos on Impact Investments 💰. And read the paper ‘SDG 17: Partnerships For The Goals’ for a more detailed breakdown, written by our 2020 fellows, Emma Marszalek and Anna Gallicchio, on our website here 🖥️: https://lnkd.in/e8pxyaKe #Finance #ImpactInvestment #ClimateAction Photo from Unsplash by Micheile Henderson

Last week, I had the opportunity to talk about Visual Storytelling with the wonderful research fellows at Planet Reimagined. As an alumni of this program, I am always impressed by the diverse groups that come together to work together - across time zones and continents - to think about solutions for this planet together. And as someone who loves listening (and telling) stories, I'm creating a word document with important resources for the fellows to access later which can inform them about better Visual Storytelling. If anyone wants to add or learn from it, the link is attached below. Hopefully, this grows! 🤞 Visual Storytelling Resources and Inspiration: https://lnkd.in/dhK-89Ew

As part of our New Futures Fellowship this year, our fellows had the opportunity to engage with Brandon Quintana, a National Geographic Explorer dedicated to shedding light on environmental justice issues faced by marginalized communities. Currently pursuing graduate studies at California State University, Fullerton, Brandon shared his journey from its day one to his current achievements, accompanied by invaluable insights for navigating graduate school. Tip #1: It is not going to be perfect Navigating academia, research, and advocacy often feels like confronting obstacles such as scholarship or program rejections or encountering setbacks like poor grades. Recognize that your path will not be flawless; there are numerous routes to achieving your goals. Tip #2: Pick the school that is the best choice for YOU While others may offer advice, select a school and program that aligns best with your goals and aspirations. Opt for what will most benefit your personal and professional development. Tip #3: Apply for summer and research programs Applying to different summer programs is important for academic careers to begin gaining research experience, and especially for learning new skills and techniques and breaking through some fears. Tip #4: Take ownership of a project Take ownership of a project that makes you think critically about solving issues you're passionate about. Tip #5: Find peers with similar goals and connect with the community Find peers with similar goals and try to build community by actively reaching out to your peers. Tip #6: Find a support system You cannot do it all alone, and you need a support system to help you get through the many barriers in school. Tip #7: Do not be afraid to step into new roles Don’t be afraid to take on new roles, because more than likely, even though it doesn't feel like it, you're probably already ready to take on that role. So be having that confidence within yourself. Tip #8: Take a holistic perspective on graduate school Take a holistic perspective when you think about graduate school or other opportunities such as your professional career. You might consider an overall potential happiness scale how realistically happy you're going to be when picking a school, or a career. Tip #9: Ask all the questions and for support when you need it It's important to ask all the questions and look for support when you need it, so seek answers and support from other people, whether it's in your lab, your project team, or your advisor, or your supervisor. Tip #10: Focus your energy on issues that matter to you You'll be offered many different roles that you can take on, but it's important to take your time. Focus your time and energy on endeavors that matter to you and bring you passion. Put your time into projects that will make sure to benefit you and your goals in the future. Think about your current skill set and where you want to be. Bonus tip: Apply for scholarships and take care of yourself!

Executive Director of the International Science Reserve at the New York Academy of Sciences; Co-founder of Planet Reimagined; and Climate and Human Rights Professor, Columbia University
Here at Aspen Ideas Climate to run a workshop on collaboration with my collaborator Adam Met that brings together two approaches that I love: International Science Reserve we organize a 10,000+ global network of scientists from different fields to work together across borders to respond to major climate linked crises. Planet Reimagined brings together researchers and communicators to advocate for fair climate solutions. Collaboration is the key. We already have lots of good ideas. What we need to execute them is to get everyone involved, to bring their different skills and strengths together so 1 + 1 + 1 = 47.
