High-powered electric outboard motors and intelligent energy management for marine transportation fleets.

About us

At Photon, our vision is to preserve the planet’s waterways and oceans through the adoption of electric propulsion technology. When compared to boats powered by internal combustion engines, we estimate that our product will reduce the total cost of ownership by almost half, require less maintenance without sacrificing performance while eliminating the use of fossil fuels. This is a clear and ripe opportunity for technical innovation that’s good for people, planet, and profit. We are developing an electric outboard motor system and integrated fleet management software platform to provide an alternative propulsion system for small boat vessels. The system includes a first in-class electric motor (300 HP, 63 kWh battery) and software capable of providing predictive maintenance, optimized operator profiles, fleet management, telemetry, and eventually, semi-autonomous functions. The software platform will also enable our revenue model, a lease optimized to actual use. We will initially target tourism and transportation fleets including businesses such as whale watching, scuba and snorkel, boat rentals, charter fishing, and water taxis. We have developed a blueprint for how to bring key stakeholders to the table, including small businesses, utility companies, governmental and regulatory organizations, marinas, and charging infrastructure partners. This blueprint is currently being built for the state of Oregon and will be replicated in our target markets.

This event served as a great reminder that we all share the same planet, and that we are all here to help each other be successful. So proud to see our CEO Marcelino Alvarez Alvarez’s passion for creating innovative solutions that promote an equitable world both environmentally and technologically. Check out The Oregon Community Foundation’s page for more information about the great work they do!

I wanted to express my gratitude for the opportunity to share some thoughts on how to bridge the digital divide at the The Oregon Community Foundation's Conexiones event in Lincoln City earlier this week. As we think about the challenges faced by rural and Latine communities, ensuring equitable access to broadband, tools, resources, and technology is just the starting point. Meeting people where they are and adapting programs to suit their needs gets us closer to bridging the divide, but it's not enough. I really enjoyed the conversation and sharing the stage with my co-panelist Herbert Beauclere. Thank you to Stephen Green for the invitation to share my story and current digital toolset. Went on an amazing sea trial run with Marcelino Alvarez the other day to witness the power of the Photon Marine electric boat engine and systems they are building here in Portland. Fast and Quiet (could talk at a normal level while speeding along). Amazing to see what they are building for the working maritime industry. Love to see this being built in Portland as we have a long history in being a ship building town. Keep your eyes on this one.

This past week Nick Schoeps represented Photon as one of only ten individuals selected to participate in the EU-US Emerging Leaders Program, which focuses on topics core to Photon’s mission: protecting our planet and investing in new cooperative technological solutions to better the world around us. Nick shared about the cutting edge work that Photon Marine team has been immersed in developing in addition to coming away excited about what others are similarly creating across the globe. Programs like this help push the needle forward across the green tech space by fostering broad collaboration, extending out internationally!

What a trip! One could not ask for a more brilliant, compassionate, engaged leaders to join for a rainy week in Brussels and Slovenia. The example Europe is setting in climate policy and action is inspiring. Today's challenges are global, amplifying the value of international collaboration. Programs like the EU-US Emerging Leaders build lasting relationships, relationships that fuel solutions to our challenges. I'm deeply grateful to our hosts, my colleagues, and Photon Marine for a truly transformative experience. Courtney A.
