With rising sea levels, severe storms, and increased flooding, today’s buildings must account for the climate change risks of tomorrow. Columbia University's new Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center is the future of flood-resilient architecture, rethinking how structures interact with water. Instead of trying to keep water out, the facility is intentionally designed to let it in. Discover the home court for Columbia’s collegiate athletes and learn more about our design approach in this month’s Architectural Record Sports & Recreation issue: https://lnkd.in/gevX7Pcw

We’re delighted to announce the winners of the 2024 Phil Freelon Design Competition! In its 20th year, our annual internal ideas challenge invited teams to re-imagine the San Francisco Public Library as it might be in the year 2049, exploring themes like civic connection, adaptive and renewable thinking, emerging technologies, and information access.   The winning proposals include a collaborative terrace for experimenting with multi-media tech, a farmer’s market beneath a vertical urban farm, and a meditative sanctuary for escaping the overload of AI-accelerated information. A big thank you to everyone who participated, and congratulations to our winners and honorable mentions. Check out the winning concepts here: https://lnkd.in/eaS4az6A

Can university housing save downtowns? UC Law SF (formerly UC Hastings) is pioneering a solution in San Francisco. By blending educational spaces with below-market apartments for students, faculty, and staff at several downtown colleges and universities, the “Academic Village” at UC Law SF aims to provide housing and catalyze a community revival. Discover how this approach is fostering a mutually beneficial relationship between San Francisco’s institutions of higher learning and the surrounding neighborhood: https://lnkd.in/e_d_jsG4 University of California, College of the Law, San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings) / Rhiannon Bailard #inspirationilluminated #PWinsights #designinsights

A new chapter is unfolding for Sabará Children’s Hospital at the corner of Rua dos Pinheiros and Avenida Rebouças. Designed by our São Paulo studio, this future pediatric complex is set to become one of the largest of its kind in Latin America. The project represents a pivotal moment for the city, transforming the Pinheiros neighborhood into a thriving urban center. Building on a legacy that began in 1962, the hospital will continue Sabará’s mission to create spaces that nurture and promote children's development. “The new hospital reflects Sabará’s core belief: that children are developing human beings and need spaces and processes that support their full potential,” says Cristiane D'Andrea from the foundation’s expansion center. The building’s design reflects this vision. With its oval, rounded facade evoking the comfort of a hug, the architecture emphasizes flow and receptivity, creating a welcoming space for young patients. Stay tuned for the grand opening of this exciting new landmark!

Our West End Labs (WEL) project is "making a statement" on the latest cover of Interior Design Magazine!   Originally built in the 1920s to move and repair cars, the reinforced concrete structure and automotive helix of 125 West End Avenue now move ideas within a fresh physical and cultural framework. Reimagining the look, feel, and systems for cutting-edge research and development, this New York gem on the mostly residential Upper West Side has been adaptively reused and transformed into a modern hub for life sciences. Today, WEL inspires the next generation of scientific discoveries and innovations.   “The charge was to make the building smart, attractive, and effective for potential tenants, to organize it for a variety of start-ups and accommodate them as they grow over time,” says Bill Harris, our Northeast regional director.
