PHA partners with the private sector to transform the food landscape in pursuit of health equity.
About us
At the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), reducing childhood obesity is our north star. PHA partners with the private sector to transform the food landscape in pursuit of health equity. We work with the private sector and PHA Honorary Chair Former First Lady Michelle Obama to make healthier choices easier for busy parents and families. In 2010, PHA was created in conjunction with Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! effort. A nonpartisan nonprofit organization led by some of the nation’s most respected health and childhood obesity experts, PHA brings together public, private, and nonprofit leaders to broker meaningful commitments and develop strategies to end childhood obesity. We ensure that commitments made are commitments kept by working with unbiased third parties to monitor and publicly report on the progress our partners are making.

Over the last year, we’ve provided over 350,000 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables to thousands of families. That brings us to over 35 million servings out of the 100 million we’ve committed to adding to the marketplace by the end of next year. We encourage you to take a moment and look through this year’s Progress Report to learn more about how we’re making good food more accessible and affordable for everyone. Rootswell, our programming in the Mississippi Delta, has been hosting a weekly farmers market, bringing fresh, affordable produce to the Clarksdale community. Every Thursday, the first 100 attendees receive a $10 voucher to purchase produce and support local farmers. We've seen a fantastic turnout, with a diverse crowd enjoying this new community event and getting excited about accessible fresh produce! Thanks to all the members of the community who come out to support the local farmers, and thank you to the local farmers for providing great produce for the community! Congratulations to our Manager of Nutrition and Health Programs, Amy Warne, MBA, RD/LD, on being a finalist for the Truth to Power Award! In honor of the late William S. Goldman (1979-2017), a historian and philanthropist, the Truth to Power Award recognizes fearless, outspoken risk-takers who fight against tyranny and strengthen our democracy by speaking truth to power. Amy was nominated for her activism focused on health equity, food insecurity, and food sovereignty for Native peoples. She fights the legacy of colonization in our food system, which prevents many Native communities from accessing healthy food. We were thrilled to participate in this amazing cooking competition in partnership with Dole Sunshine Company®! This program introduces kids and families in underserved communities to the tools and knowledge they need to make healthy choices. Our very own SVP of Marketing & Communications, Jason Wilson attended as a judge and got the chance to taste all of the culinary masterpieces! Through innovative events like this, we're fostering the next generation of recipe creators and helping bridge the nutrition gap in communities that need it most.
Last week, we had the honor to host three talented young chefs in our Westlake Village office for the Sunshine For All Cities Nutritious is Delicious Cook-Off: Deniasha Burton of Baltimore, MD, Daleyza Angulo of Merced, CA and Caylee Boyd of Jackson, MI. These three girls were crowned regional champions in their local Boys & Girls Clubs of America chapters and flown to CA for the finals. Seeing our young chefs foster a passion for nutritious living and culinary pursuits is one of the many things we wanted kids to takeaway from the program. As part of our ongoing Dole Promise, this program aims to inspire a passion for nutritious living by providing more access to nutritious foods and providing hands-on instruction to cook healthier meals. All of this combined has helped over 110,000 families gain access to better nutrition and provided over 7.5 million servings of fruit to food insecure communities - an effort that has received recognition from the The White House Challenge To End Hunger Congratulations to each contestant and we look forward to watching you all continue to grow in your cooking education! 🎉 Special congratulations to our Grand Prize winner Deniasha Burton! Special thanks to our program partners: Partnership for a Healthier America, Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Mississippi, Boys & Girls Club of Merced County, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Baltimore ➡ Click through the gallery to see snippets from an action-packed 3 days with our partners.

School food programs are about more than just feeding kids. They're a form of community care and a policy tool for advancing education, health, justice, food sovereignty, and sustainability. PHA's Margaret Read co-authored a chapter of "Transforming School Food Politics around the World" a book that sets the stage to reimagine school food as part of the infrastructure of daily life. The book includes insights from eight countries across the Global North and South and each chapter provides readers with innovative strategies that can be used in their efforts to change school food policy and systems.
