Happy Anniversary to Open Health's Caring Clinic of Louisiana! Many people have contributed to making Open Health Care Clinic the essential community resource we are today and we wanted to share this history with you so that you understand how we began. In January 2007, we learned that a physician with the largest group of privately insured HIV+ patients was disbanding his practice to pursue a Hospitalist position in Mississippi. Knowing there was insufficient provider capacity with HIV treatment experience to absorb those patients in a short period, HIV AIDS Alliance for Region Two (HAART) Board of Directors made the bold decision to begin providing medical services. Caring Clinic of Louisiana saw its first patient on July 9, 2007. Initial providers included James Osterberger M.D., Warren Fraser M.D., Michael Hymbaugh M.D., and Anne French Scroggs FNP. That operation struggled for many years but accomplished its mission of providing a reliable source of care for patients. As HIV treatment has matured, providers with treatment experience have increased but are still limited in number. Operating that clinic and helping patients in a new way encouraged the Board to seek FQHC status in 2014, and in 2015 that goal was accomplished. Caring Clinic is still active, though dormant, Limited Liability Company and the Board plans for it to continue to exist under the newly formed Open Health Foundation. The Foundation will help to ensure that Open Health Care Clinic continues to serve the Baton Rouge community for generations to come. Let's join together to remember the day our organization began providing healthcare services in Baton Rouge. It's one for the history books! Tim Young Open Health Executive Director
