Thank you Eric and Wendy Schmidt for your contribution to NPR’s collaborative journalism!
Over 50% of U.S. counties have limited or no access to local news—with the country having lost nearly 3,000 local newspapers since 2005. To rebuild trust in the shared institutions that make up our great American experiment, investing in local media is critical. That is why I am so thrilled that Eric & Wendy Schmidt are investing in local journalism via NPR. Their $5.5 million grant will let us establish the Appalachia and Mid-South regional newsroom in Kentucky and Tennessee, bolster the Mountain West News Bureau, and expand existing regional newsrooms in California and the Midwest – all to boost local coverage and investigative journalism. Many thanks to Eric and Wendy, to our NPR team members, and to our wonderful member stations giving voice to local communities every day.

Planet Money Summer School returned yesterday for a new, eight-part season. This year, Summer School brings you ‘An Economic History of the World.’ This season Planet Money Summer School is heading out on a time-traveling vacation through the history of the world to see how the economic systems of today came to be. Each episode features great stories from history illustrating economic concepts and their origins and answers a fundamental question. We’ll travel to a tiny island in Micronesia to ask the question: what is money? We’ll take up arms at an English factory to rage against the industrial revolution. And we'll look back at a time in America when you could pay for your drink using one of 8,000 kinds of money. As in years past, the season culminates with a chance at earning your very own diploma. You just have to pass the quiz. Listen along to find out. The first episode is available now. New episodes drop every Wednesday until Labor Day. https://lnkd.in/eT9KP4V5

Some of the nation’s largest employers — like Walmart, McDonald’s and Jiffy Lube — are broaching a new frontier: convincing colleges to give credits to retail and fast-food workers for what they learn on the job, counting toward a degree. Educators hope this brings more students into the fold, expanding access to education and allowing more people to achieve better-paying, more-secure careers with less debt and fewer years of juggling work and study. Behind the scenes, executives paint a grander transformation of hiring, a world where your resume will rely less on titles or diplomas and act more like a passport of skills you’ve proven you have. Learn more about how it works 👇
