All month long, we are highlighting some very special stories celebrating the strength and resilience of our littlest patients, the Novant Health team members who care for them and their families, and the philanthropic partners who help provide world class technology and other resources that aid our teams in providing next level care. When Meagan Lilly was only six months along in her pregnancy, she found out that she needed an emergency C-section. Her son, Hudson, weighed only 1 pound, 6 ounces at birth and was immediately taken to the NICU, leaving Meagan unable to hold him right away. It was two days after his sudden arrival that she finally held him for the first time. There’s a sisterhood among NICU moms, nurses and volunteers. “It’s important to know you’re not alone,” Meagan said. “The women in the NICU have seen it all, and they know the right things to say.” Martha Harrelson, the NICU nurse manager, has certainly seen it all. This July, she will celebrate 44 years of working with newborns at Forsyth Medical Center. Harrelson advised Meagan, as she does all the NICU moms: “Take one day at a time.” At Novant Health Foundation, we bridge the gap between our communities and causes that resonate with them, fostering profound connections. This is exemplified in the NICU, where deep bonds form between infants, parents, our dedicated NICU team, and other families facing similar challenges.
