July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, a crucial time to spread awareness on the unique mental health hurdles faced by under-resourced communities. Individuals living with Alzheimer's and related dementias may experience psychological distress, which can be exacerbated by racial disparities. We are committed to supporting innovative solutions that promote healthy aging in place for diverse communities. Researchers with pioneering ideas to tackle aging-related challenges, especially within underserved communities, are encouraged to explore opportunities within our SBIR and STTR programs. Take action today to revolutionize healthcare options for aging adults: https://go.nih.gov/e6epOI5 #MinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth #SmallBiz

Through the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Start-Up Challenge and Accelerator, we support startups that aim to improve the lives of older adults, such as HeartScreen Health. HeartScreen Health is developing a smartphone-based tool which allows doctors to listen to patients' heart sounds from anywhere in the world, thereby expanding accessibility to care and increasing the number of screens occurring across the industry. Heart valve disease affects millions of Americans and is more common among older adults, and innovations such as HeartScreen Health make early detection and intervention more accessible for all patients. Since completing the Challenge, HeartScreen Health was selected as a finalist for the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) Healthcare Innovation Challenge and received an AMWAxCEL Fellowship, which offers additional expert support for their startup endeavors. We're excited to continue following their journey as they move towards commercialization.
