In recognition of #InternationalWomeninEngineeringDay on June 23, Katie Z., a planning manager at Texas Water Utilities, shares her experience as an engineer working in the water industry. We hope this spotlight helps inform young women who are considering a rewarding career in engineering. #INWED24 1. How did you get involved in the water industry? Having witnessed firsthand the critical importance of clean and reliable water during a crisis, I was motivated to pursue degrees in civil and environmental engineering. Upon graduating I began my career as an environmental engineer, specializing in the design of water and wastewater treatment systems. 2. In your experience, why should women consider a career in engineering? What about the water industry specifically? Encouraging women to enter engineering not only enhances their career prospects but also strengthens the field as a whole through diversity and inclusion. A career in engineering, particularly in the water industry, allows women to address complex challenges, foster innovation, and attain personal and professional fulfillment. 3. What do you enjoy most about working at TWU as a planning manager? While my academic education provided me with the knowledge to execute tasks correctly, my role as a planning manager taught me the importance of making ethically sound decisions. I enjoy collaborating with diverse teams and departments to find innovative solutions and address complex challenges. 4. What advice do you have for young women who are considering engineering as a career path? Choose a field within engineering that genuinely interests you. Whether it’s civil, mechanical, electrical or software engineering, your passion will keep you motivated and engaged.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when a Union General arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of slavery. This historic event not only symbolizes the liberation of enslaved individuals but also serves as a reminder of the enduring journey toward freedom and justice. As an organization committed to diversity, inclusion, and social responsibility, we recognize that this day is not only a celebration of the past but also a call to action for the present and future. Happy #Juneteenth to all, and please stay safe.
