About us

New Music School is the Premier school for music education in Chicago. NMS provides conservatory level training for students under the age of 18. Mentored and taught by Chicago Symphony Orchestra musicians, renowned collegiate professors, and other world-class faculty, our students are exposed to unconstrained musical development in a fun, yet high-expectation atmosphere. In year five, New Music School was named Best in Chicago by Chicago Magazine and awarded as a Founding School for the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program. NMS bolsters a student body of over 500 private students. Students have recently achieved great accolades from being accepted and attending the Juilliard School, winning International and National Competitions, being produced by Quincy Jones, performing on TV and Radio shows such as The Ellen Show, WGN News, Windy City Live, and WFMT's Impromptu, Rush Hour Concerts, and Introductions. Location: We're located in Chicago's at 900 N Michigan Ave, Level 6 adjacent to Steinway in the Bloomingdales Mall. This central location in the heart of the city allows for easy access by all forms of transportation for students and families. Additionally, if we are in your neighborhood or suburb, we offer lessons in students' homes and other satellite locations.

    NMS Student — Zarin Mehta wins Kaufmann Music Center International Piano Competition (Senior Division) Congratulations to Zarin Mehta for winning the 2024 Kaufmann Music Center International Piano Competition (Senior Division). Zarin Mehta, 16, has burst onto the classical music scene as a concert pianist and composer, winning first prize in the 2024 Kaufman International Piano Competition. Last year he won first prize in Senior Piano and twice has won second prize in Composition in the National Finals of the Music Teachers National Association Competitions. He has also claimed prizes in the Hilton Head International Piano Competition, the International Young Artist Concerto Competition, the Chicago National Chamber Music Competition, the Rembrandt Young Artist Chamber Competition, YoungArts, and performed on WFMT recently, premiering his composition and transcriptions. Zarin is a student of Jeffrey Panko, Winston Choi and coached by Sean Bennett in the House of Ravel at New Music School. Learn more at zarinmehta.com

    Introducing Dr. Kelly Hill, NMS's new Student Affairs Coordinator At New Music School, we continue to deliver a first-rate education and community for our students; delivering on promises to provide them the finest faculty and staff. We have identified new staff roles to elevate student and faculty experiences at New Music School. Today, we introduce the first of those new roles - Student Affairs Coordinator. We created this role to give a "personalized" service to each of our students and their families. Have questions on your students goals? Need to book a student recital on or off-site? Interested in applying for summer festivals and competitions, colleges, or just wondering "what's next?" Our Student Affairs Coordinator will be there for you. New Music School has appointed Dr. Kelly Hill to this position. Kelly comes to us with experience as a Music School Administrator for the Midwest Conservatory of Music in Schaumburg, IL. She has held previous positions in administration as Program Coordinator at the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments, and has served as Project Assistant in library and archival positions with the University of Iowa Rita Benton Music Library, the Beverly Willis Architectual Archival Papers, and the Yale Sterling Music Library Rare Materials. She recently received her Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Iowa, and has taught Voice Lessons for a variety of institutions including the University of Iowa, Augustana College, St. Ambrose University, and Yale University. It is through this combination of acquried skills that she will help create and implement strategies to help guide New Music School students to success in their musical studies.    In this role of Student Affairs Coordinator, Kelly aims to provide a clear roadmap for our families on how best we can serve your student(s). She will walk the students' and families through their House curriculum to ensure there is clarity, understanding and goals set so our students feel the wonderful sense of achievement each semester. In partnership with the students faculty member, she will also arrange for the fulfillment of the students House requirements each semester. For example, she is overseeing the students' attendance at the theory table, departmental recital and jury. She will work closely with administration, faculty and student's families to ensure we are delivering on our agreed upon goals and seeing the student succeed. We are very excited to welcome Kelly to NMS and look forward to the wonderful new opportunities she will bring to our exceptional students!
