About us
The National Committee on United States-China Relations is the leading American non-profit, non-partisan organization devoted to building constructive and durable relationships between the United States and China. The Committee creates opportunities for informed discussion and reasoned debate about the issues of common interest and concern to the United States, mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. With over five decades of experience developing innovative programs at the forefront of U.S.-China relations, the National Committee focuses its exchange, educational, and policy activities on politics and security, education, governance and civil society, economic cooperation, media and transnational issues, addressing these with respect to mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The Committee’s distinguished board of directors and individual and corporate members from around the United States represent many viewpoints, but share the conviction that productive U.S.-China relations require ongoing public education, face-to-face contact, and the forthright exchange of ideas. How did subnational connections between local U.S. and Chinese officials develop? In 1978, the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations brought the first group of mayors and deputy mayors from the People’s Republic of China to the United States. In each city on the itinerary, which included Washington, Baltimore, New York, Minneapolis, Dallas-Fort Worth, and San Francisco, meetings with American counterparts covered a wide spectrum of urban issues: city planning and management, cooperative regional planning, the role of the federal government in municipal affairs, urban construction, the design and building of metropolitan mass-transportation systems, and protection of the environment among others. The Chinese also had opportunities to interact with Americans in more casual settings. Delegation members were invited into Americans’ homes for dinner and conversation; they even attended professional baseball and football games, went to the symphony, and enjoyed other cultural events. How did U.S. and Chinese universities build connections with each other? In November 1974, with the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, the first group of American university and college presidents traveled to China, spending three weeks as guests of Chinese educational organizations. The delegation spent time at Peking and Tsinghua Universities, as well as various other schools, factories, and communes, visited Chinese scientific institutes, and attended briefings, including one with then-Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping. Three years later, in November 1977, the Committee hosted the first delegation of Chinese higher education officials to the United States. Today, there are dozens of academic collaborations between U.S. and Chinese universities, including four joint venture universities established in China in partnership with U.S. universities. The past decades have also seen the exchange of hundreds of thousands of students between the two countries. Learn more: ncuscr.org
