Optometry students - it's never too early to start preparing! With boards coming up later this summer, take a look at these top-tier tips from a practicing optometrist on how to set yourself up for success.
NBEO Board exams may sound daunting, but if you prepare well in advance, then success is within reach! My first tip for optometry students preparing for national boards part 1 or part 2 is - practice, practice, practice! Once you have thoroughly studied the material, I recommend doing as many practice questions and tests as possible. These sample questions and tests are great tools because they help you pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses. Once you know what areas might require a bit more practice, you can revisit the material and learn any key topics you may have missed. When you are taking the timed practice tests, my next tip is to eliminate any distractions and create an environment similar to the actual boards. This will help you get comfortable with the exam process so that you are well prepared for the experience on exam day. Most importantly, be sure to take advantage of all resources available to you as you prepare. When I was preparing for boards, I found that in addition to textbooks and class notes, utilizing different study programs such as KMK, OptoPrep, and ODQuestions provided me with additional practice to help me be successful. Whether it’s a study program or a study group with fellow students, using different tools to help supplement your board exam prep is just another investment into your future as an OD! As you prepare for board exams later this summer, remember how hard you have worked to get to this point. I wish you luck in your preparation and exams and look forward to welcoming the next generation of optometrists!
