Vacation on your mind? This tropical scene is actually a petri dish containing an artistic arrangement of genetically engineered bacteria. The image showcases eight of the fluorescent proteins created in the laboratory of the late Roger Y. Tsien, a cell biologist at UC San Diego. Tsien, along with Osamu Shimomura of the Marine Biology Laboratory and Martin Chalfie of Columbia University, share the 2008 The Nobel Prize in chemistry for their work on green fluorescent protein-a naturally glowing molecule from jellyfish that has become a powerful tool for studying molecules inside living cells. The breadth and complexity of nutrition science demands that we ask ourselves and one another to engage and leverage intentional and nontraditional connections. In my July Drew’s Views blog, I talk about how it is “Through these touchpoints, we surface new research questions.” In “Small Office; Big Footprint” from the National Institutes of Health, Office of Nutrition Research, I talk about how my office works to create and sustain key connections across NIH, the federal government, and beyond, to enable new research because…#Nutrition is everyone’s business! Using health data from almost 213,000 Americans who experienced reinfections, researchers have found that severe infections from the virus that causes COVID-19 tend to foreshadow similar severity of infection the next time a person contracts the disease. Additionally, scientists discovered that long COVID was more likely to occur after a first infection compared to a reinfection. https://bit.ly/4czMaO7 #COVID19 #LongCOVID #infection #science #research #NIH

Early findings from a small clinical trial provide evidence that a new cellular immunotherapy approach may be effective in treating metastatic solid tumors. In the trial, NIH researchers genetically engineered normal white blood cells, known as lymphocytes, from each patient to produce receptors that recognize and attack their specific cancer cells. These initial findings are from people with metastatic colorectal cancer who had already undergone multiple earlier treatments. https://lnkd.in/e7hCSznR #cancer #CancerResearch #immunotherapy #tumors #research #NCI #NIH
