About us

Muscatine Power and Water (MPW) is a not-for-profit utility serving approximately 13,000 customers. Our customers are our driving force and the decisions we make every day are in service of benefiting our community. We create enhanced customer experiences through the services we offer, backed by advanced technology with special attention to service and top-notch customer support. What makes us unique? We produce and deliver nearly every critical utility service over highly reliable, local distribution systems and networks. Electricity, water, gigabit internet, TV and phone- we are the backbone for today’s home, business and enterprise organization. With the Water Utility founded in 1900, the Electric Utility in 1922, and the Telecommunications Utility in 1996, MPW exists because the citizens of Muscatine voted that their utility services be delivered by a local entity that puts community needs first. Our nearly 265 employees are an integral part of the community and most live, play and volunteer within the communities we serve. They are customers, too, and have a vested interest in ensuring we deliver quality, reliable services. Fast Facts: *MPW reliably provides, on average, over 10.3 billion gallons of safe, great tasting water to Muscatine. *MPW’s electric and communications lines and water pipes total over 688.2 miles combined. *Because of energy efficiency programs implemented by MPW customers in a single year, nearly 26 million kWh of electricity will be saved over the next 10 years. *3 things our employees love best about working at MPW are their co-workers, the friendly work environment, and leadership is accessible and involved.

  • A lot of news was made last Tuesday evening with the storm, locally, and its resulting damage. What you may have missed was a major piece of news that happened a few hours earlier during the monthly meeting of the MPW Board of Trustees. The Trustees took a major step in our Powering the Future initiative Tuesday by unanimously approving the purchase and installation of a state-of-the-art combined heat and power generating unit (CHP). CHP units are highly efficient; they produce electricity and capture waste heat to produce industrial process steam. The small CHP will become MPW’s Unit 10 when it goes online in 2028. Unit 9 was constructed in the early 80’s....it's been 40 years since Muscatine has built entirely new generation at our Power Plant site. We partnered with Stanley Consultants (as we did with Unit 9) on the evaluation and design and will be selling steam from the unit to local company, GPC, in a way that is a true win-win for all MPW electric customers. The vote on Tuesday was the culmination of years of research, evaluation, design, and public presentations on the topic. A special thanks to Power Production and Supply Director, Doug White, and the core team for their work getting this project approved. It’s an exciting time for MPW and our customers as we launch this new generation resource as well as Muscatine Solar 1 in the next few years. It's summer! And, that means the MPW Interns are hard at work and learning more about their respective roles while gaining valuable on-the job experience, BUT, #learning CAN be fun! Last week, these interns had the opportunity to go up in our bucket trucks, which are used to work on power lines and trim trees. Through this experience, they got to visit with the line crew and learn a little more about their jobs and get a glimpse of what it looks like to be in their shoes for a day - just one of the many valuable benefits of becoming an #Intern at MPW! #TeacherExtern #IowaSTEM @iowastem Iowa Department of Education https://lnkd.in/gmmV9Seb

Recently, MPW employees, their families, and even some furry friends enjoyed a delightful morning participating in Iowa DNR's “Free Fishing Weekend” at our Administration and Operations Center property. We’re lucky to have a vibrant pond on property with a great ecosystem of fish. Allowing the pond to be fished during the IDNR weekend event encourages outdoor recreation, family fun, and building co-worker relationships by learning and meeting other MPW families, making it a highlight for many of us at MPW!
