Enjoying the #SHRM24 conference in the Windy City! More posts to come as I get to catch up with many friends! I also meet new friends thanks to incredible introductions. 🫶 Case in point, was introduced to Joy Chen (陈愉) by a former coworker this past week. So grateful as it’s like we’ve known each other so much longer. I sat in on her session today and really good content! Applicable regardless if you are managing across multiple countries or just in the U.S. as our workforces are diverse and our employees each are unique. Check out her recent Harvard Business Review article too! https://lnkd.in/gTkkBtdq Just a few highlights as too many to include: ✔️ Western cultures have an emphasis of me over we and individual accomplishments are rewarded vs team. Speaking up and stating opinions is dominant. Analytical view is dominant. ✔️ Non-Western cultures have an emphasis of we over me. Silence is seen as a sign of respect. Holistic view is of importance. ✔️ WEIRD cultures account for 96% of psychological survey respondents, but only 12% of world population. (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) ✔️Leaders need to examine their own values and views and assess does one have their cultural goggles off! ✔️Understand the logic of other cultures Fantastic session Joy and can’t wait to continue our conversation! 👏

❓ Why does the percentage of female CEOs remain so low?  As a former executive recruiter, I saw this firsthand. I'd invest serious time developing gender-balanced candidate slates which delighted my clients—only to see them consistently choose a man. Here’s how I see it ↴ Most leaders are committed to inclusion. But often, their good intentions are undermined by their own behavioral norms, which impact who they choose as leaders. Early in my career, Deborah Tannen’s book Talking from 9 to 5 deeply influenced my understanding of this issue. It still does. Excerpts: ✯ "The head of a large division of a multinational corporation was running a meeting devoted to performance assessment. Each senior manager stood up and evaluated the individuals in his group for promotion. Although there were women in every group, not one made the cut. Each manager declared that every woman in his group lacked the self-confidence needed to be promoted. The division head began to doubt his ears. How could it be that all the talented women in the division suffered from a lack of self-confidence? ✯ "In all likelihood, they didn’t. Consider the many women who have left large corporations to start their own businesses, obviously exhibiting enough confidence to succeed on their own. ✯ "He was probably right to be skeptical. The senior managers were judging the women in their groups by their own linguistic norms, but women—like people who have grown up in a different culture—have often learned different styles of speaking than men, which can make them seem less competent and self-assured than they are." ✯ "The CEO of a major corporation often has to make decisions in five minutes about matters on which others may have worked five months. He uses this rule: If the person making the proposal seems confident, the CEO approves it. If not, he says no. This might seem like a reasonable approach. But my field of research, socio-linguistics, suggests otherwise. The CEO obviously thinks he knows what a confident person sounds like. But his judgment, which may be dead right for some people, may be dead wrong for others." ✯ " Using language is learned social behavior: How we talk and listen are deeply influenced by cultural experience. Although we might think that our ways of saying what we mean are natural, we can run into trouble if we interpret and evaluate others as if they necessarily felt the same way we’d feel if we spoke the way they did." ☀ Now, I enable leadership teams to expand their cultural toolkits, to more deeply engage with colleagues and clients of all backgrounds. In other words: I help leaders shift from demanding "culture fit" to embracing "culture add," so they can fully leverage the diversity on their teams. 💬   • How has YOUR communication style impacted your career progression? • How do you ensure that you hear and value all your team members? #Leadership #Inclusion #Diversity #Communication #Collaboration #Culture #Women

  • 🌍 Angela and I first met 9 years ago when I was working in China and she wrote a profile of me for 时尚COSMO (COSMOPOLITAN China). Times have changed. Now, Angela writes for an ecology WeChat Official account, and I'm back in the States. Last weekend, she visited me on our backyard farm outside of Los Angeles. Angela wanted to document how we feed our chickens our leftover food. As omnivores, "the Ladies" devour everything from watermelon rinds to corn silk and even chicken, upcycling them into fresh organic eggs. What they don't eat, like banana peels and coffee grinds, go in the compost. Showing Angela around reminded me how lucky our family is to get to watch nature's cycle at work in our backyard! I'm blessed that my career has brought me in contact with people from such varied backgrounds and perspectives. Whether Angela is focused on fashion or ecology, she always drives toward deeper meaning and greater connection with the world at large. Reflecting on our reunion, I feel even more inspired to help others build stronger, deeper connections across diverse backgrounds. 🌟 Who in your life inspires you to think differently? #Leadership #Inspiration #Sustainability #Growth #Community #Connection #Culture #China

In 1966, LIFE magazine published a feature under the quietly chilling headline, “The Crime of Being Married.” Illustrated with photographs by Grey Villet, the article told the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, a married interracial couple battling Virginia’s anti-miscegenation statutes. Villet’s warm, intimate pictures revealed a close-knit family, including children and grandparents, living their lives in opposition to a patently unjust law—but also captured eloquent moments that suggested just how heavily the Loving’s defiance of that law weighed on the very private couple. The LIFE article and Villet’s images, read and viewed today, assume a poignancy and power perhaps unimagined by the magazine’s readers in 1966. The couple, after all, was awaiting an appeal on a court ruling that had, in effect, banished them from their hometown. At the time, the Lovings were adamant (in their own unassuming way) that they had no interest in being cast as Civil Rights heroes. All they wanted was to live their lives and raise their children in peace. One year later, on June 12, 1967, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously decided in Loving v. Virginia that all antimiscengination laws across the country are unconstitutional. Above is from a deeply moving TIME article by Lily Rothman. Click through to see the article with the LIFE photos of Richard and Mildred Loving and their family. https://lnkd.in/eye7W7Uh ❤️ Sometimes, it can feel like society is ripping apart at the seams, but it feels to me that 2024 is the perfect time to contemplate the story of the Lovings. By now, families throughout America have mixed marriages within them. And Loving v. Virginia set the stage for the widespread acceptance of gay marriage. What once was illegal is now commonplace. Society moves forward. The night is always darkest before the dawn. 🌅 In the end, love wins out. It always will. Happy (bit belated) Loving Day, everyone! 💕 ⬇️💬 What do you think about the Lovings quiet, remarkable yet unremarkable story, and its lessons for our world today? 🔥 Why has our Harvard Business Review article spread like wildfire? Because maximizing the contributions of Asian employees is just good business. Here's why: 1️⃣  Asians represent a whopping 50% of the workforce in many knowledge industries (EEOC). Amidst continued economic uncertainty, any company seeking to improve productivity should dismantle barriers to Asian employee contributions to corporate results and profits. (Chen/Cheng-Cimini, HBR, 2024). 2️⃣  Asians are America’s fastest-growing business and consumer segments (Pew, 2021) and are key to over half of the world’s markets. Any company aiming for growth should leverage Asian employees for insider knowledge and access to burgeoning markets (Chen/Cheng-Cimini, HBR, 2024). 3️⃣  When companies invest in Asian employees, the payoffs go beyond the financial. Companies leveraging the diverse talents of their Asian workforce can evolve into more global, agile, and powerful hubs of innovation and growth (Chen/Cheng-Cimini, HBR, 2024). In the article, we provide a 5-step roadmap for companies to maximize profits and shareholder value by better leveraging their Asian employees. Angela Cheng-Cimini and I appreciate all who’ve shared our article across your networks, including: 🔹 Dave de Csepel, Vice Chair of Southern California’s largest venture investor network, TCA Venture Group, calls it essential reading for every investor or senior leader. 🔹 Buck Gee, Denise Peck, Dave Lu, Brian Pang, Zach Heng, SHRM-CP and John Wang, OGs of civic leadership across our communities. 🔹 Quita Beeler Highsmith, the extraordinary Chief Diversity Officer at Genentech. 🔹 Civic organizations including Asia Society, Ascend, Stand with Asian Americans, and Asian Leaders Alliance. • From my experience recruiting Fortune 500 CEOs, I see the exodus of women leaders at Goldman Sachs as part of a broader challenge. Many leaders have good intentions but don't fully realize how their own leadership behaviors are culturally informed. This often leads to inadvertent sidelining of those who don't fit the mold, such as women and introverts. So, when leaders encourage "being your full authentic self," those with divergent styles face a dilemma: be effective OR be authentic. Some of these talented individuals assimilate into the dominant culture. Others seek greener pastures. Either way, leaders end up in an echo chamber, missing out on diverse perspectives. The path forward is for leaders to expand their cultural toolkit by learning about and adapting themselves to different leadership styles. By thus shifting from seeking "culture fit" to embracing "culture add," leaders can lead the way to genuine inclusion and growth. #Leadership #women #inclusion #culture #careers #attrition #strategichr
