It's been interesting to see how Mizou AI has been adopted to support the teaching and learning of various subjects and curriculums. One of the most popular applications is proving to be #languages, and Joe Dale very comprehensively demonstrated this during his speech at the #PTIResidential at University of York . Read more about his insightful session below!

Yesterday, I had the honour of presenting at the PTI Residential at The University of York. My 90-minute session, "AI-Powered Language Education: From Voice Control to Interactive Quizzes", was a hit with the delegates. I kicked off by introducing AI concepts in education, including Large Language Models and their role in personalised learning. I touched on ethical considerations, mentioning the WEIRD mnemonic and prompt engineering. I demonstrated various AI tools like ChatGPT, Turboscribe, Diffit, Brisk, Quizizz AI, and Questionwell. The audience was particularly impressed with Brisk Teaching's ability to generate self-marking Google Quizzes. I also showed how to create Microsoft Quizzes and interactive versions on Quizizz. In the second part, we delved into creative visual content creation. Using Padlet's "I can't draw" feature, I created a birthday scene image. I then used various tools to describe the image and create GCSE-style activities based on it. I shared examples of using AI for dual coding and showcased Magic Padlet's custom board feature for GCSE photocard practice. The final session explored audio and animation integration, with Mizou's custom multilingual chatbots causing quite a stir! I wrapped up by highlighting how these AI tools can save time and boost teaching efficiency. I also promoted my Facebook group "Language Teaching with AI" and other courses. This morning, as another example of how ChatGPT can create written descriptions of images, I took a picture of three sheets of paper with Post-it notes from a later activity at the residential. Teachers were asked to give different reasons why we should be teaching modern foreign languages. By uploading those photos to ChatGPT, I was able to create a concise summary in the form of a table, which I then turned into a downloadable Word document. I then asked ChatGPT to create some additional reflective questions, which I exported to a Google Doc.. Overall, the session was a great success, showcasing the potential of AI in language education and providing practical tools for teachers to implement in their classrooms. https://lnkd.in/ex9V7UUx https://lnkd.in/eKqK3qYD

In the latest in the AI Bytes series I write about how using Chatbots can facilitate scenario based learning. I leveraged the Mizou AI platform to enhance an ESL lesson. This is one of the most powerful applications of AI technologies that we can leverage - adaptive, interactive learning tools. Much of what we do in the first instance is to use AI to increase our own efficiency, develop more effective resources and make lessons more engaging through more creativity in our delivery - and this if fine as a starting point. However, fundamentally we are just doing the same thing, more efficiently and quickly. The real learning gains will be when we can generate more student agency and hopefully this is an example I can leverage in more contexts. Check out the blog for more details. #EdTech #AIinEDU #AIintheclassroom #AIinschools #AIforteachers #AIineducation #ESL

🚨 Higher education edtech is a busy space, and it can be hard to keep up with innovation. 🔎 At Emerge, we want to help you see clearly. 🎓 Members of our Higher Education Edtech Leadership Board, chaired by Mary Curnock Cook CBE and in partnership with Jisc, tell us that keeping up to date with the best emerging edtech companies in HE is difficult, confusing and overwhelming. So every year, we publish a list of top edtech companies — crowdsourced from our HE board and further afield — to help university senior leaders see what is out there. By highlighting great practice, we hope to encourage innovation. We launched this year’s Edtech 20:20 vision list with an open session on Zoom chaired by Mary Curnock Cook, who interviewed Gavin Ian McLachlan (Vice-Principal and Chief Information Officer, University of Edinburgh) from our HE board about the importance of this list for the HE sector and then focused on as selection inspiring founders from the top 40 - Diego Fanara (Unibuddy), Julia Dixon (ESAI), Greg Marschall(LearnWise) and Herk Kailis (Cadmus) - who told us about the hard problems they were solving for universities around the world. 📝 You can see the full agenda of the meeting here; https://lnkd.in/eNUjBfEw ⏭️ And you can access the full 20:20 vision write-up here: https://lnkd.in/e_VyhZwP The full write-up includes; > The full list of top emerging edtech companies, with summaries and insights > Views from sector experts including some of our Venture Partners > A series of market maps sketching out the landscape of key players ❗️Note: The list is based on public and private data. Crunchbase and Pitchbook are primary data sources where we capture company valuation, funding raised, HQ location and employee data. We leverage LinkedIn as a secondary source for employee data. As an edtech-specialist venture firm, Emerge Education also captures our proprietary data to complete our analysis. The list is crowdsourced and voted on by our HE edtech leadership board. Full criteria are in the write-up. No single list can ever capture the full scope of innovation in this space — there will always have to be some exciting companies that were not included. Please let us know if you think we’ve missed any great companies — we will add all suggestions to our full dataset and consider them ahead of next year’s update! 💥 And finally, if you are developing an innovative company in edtech/ future of work and are looking for your first cheque funding do apply to us here: https://lnkd.in/eWi_9J5U - we look at everything as we believe in democratising access to funding (just as much as we believe in democratising access to education and skills!). #highereducation, #edtech, #founders, #skillsgap, #innovation, #tertiaryeducation

On Saturday, June 15th, it was boiling. However, some presentations could cool down the heat wave in South Korea's capital city, Seoul, and its second-largest city, Busan. It was the presentation and lecture of Mizou AI, a safe AI chatbot for students. At a voluntary gathering of teachers studying edtech, Mizou was introduced as an edtech tool reminiscent of Harry Potter's magic, attracting the interest of many teachers. In Busan, local educators participated in an edtech camp hosted by Mizou's Korean partner, "Learn Today," where they learned how to utilize Mizou. Additionally, a case study of Mizou was presented at the 2024 PKETA/GETA Joint Academic Conference on AI-based English Education: Challenges and Opportunities, hosted by Pusan National University, the top national university in the same region of Busan. Mizou is widely used in Korea for student education and to reduce teachers' workload. South Korea will introduce AI digital textbooks in the world in 2025.

Can AI truly match human creativity? Read this engaging experiment and learn why the answer is... 👇

The AI English Teacher - Teacher of Media Studies @ Ponteland High School. Former Head of Languages and Cultures Faculty @ PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL | MEd, AST.

The Mediocrity Machine During a recent creative writing lesson with a key stage 3 class I noticed several students using AI to assist in their work. I had previously discussed with the class the ways in which AI can and cannot be useful, but to facilitate a more controlled use of AI in the work I supplied them with a GDPR compliant chatbot that I created, using the Mizou AI platform, to ensure standardised guardrails and to offer limited help within clearly defined parameters. I allowed the student to get assistance with synonyms and examples of imagery and even to ask for feedback from the AI on short samples of their own writing.  Ultimately, the assessment was to be handwritten in their books, and they were allowed to use AI in the preparation stage, as long as they adhered to the clear guidelines I provided. The Experiment  To demonstrate some of the limitations of AI in creative writing, I conducted an experiment in a following lesson. I created a detailed prompt for describing a desert scene and fed it into four different AI models. Despite producing seemingly different descriptions, closer examination revealed striking similarities in structure, style, and the use of clichés. Student Observations: I presented the AI-generated descriptions to the students on a single worksheet. Initially impressed, the students soon discovered the similarities between the texts when they looked beyond the micro-focus on impressive vocabulary and imagery. They identified patterns in personification, sensory language, and the use of poetic and metaphorical language. Why so average? The ‘sameyness’ of the AI generated texts can be explained when we consider the mechanism behind the ‘Artificial Intelligence’ (oh how I wish this term had never come into use…). Given that what the AI is doing is aggregating all of the examples of descriptions of deserts that it can get and then blending them to reach a sort of ‘average’ it is hardly surprising that what happened was an underlying level of similarity. What was stark was that the students could see it and so could I.  The classroom takeaway - hopefully my students will now see how much more creative and interesting they are than an AI. Implications:   This experiment highlighted the importance of teaching students the strengths and limitations of AI in the writing process. While AI can be useful for providing alternatives, serving as a thesaurus, and offering feedback on the effectiveness of one's work, it falls short in terms of creativity and originality. As educators, we must focus on developing students' own creative abilities and building their confidence before introducing AI as an enhancement tool. After four classes of introduction and #coding upskilling on Micro:bit Educational Foundation #makecodearcade, our Grade 4 students have begun creating their own games based on an area of expertise they would like to teach others about through a game-based experience. Even after completing a series of scaffolded tutorials, students still needed just-in-time support in order to continue to make steady progress on their games. As I am one teacher in a class with 20 students, I had students lining up for support after exhausting all of their independent and collaborative troubleshooting routines and resources. To adapt, I created a chatbot on Mizou AI to support the students with their specific coding enquiries. If you find yourself in a similar situation, feel free to use the bot I’ve created.
