The Mississippi Department of Education creates an educational system that prepares students for college and career.

About us

The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) provides resources and technical support to Mississippi’s public school system. The department also functions as a resource for federal education requirements and funding. The Mississippi Board of Education appoints the State Superintendent of Education, sets public education policy and oversees the MDE. As the administrative arm of the Board, MDE is responsible for implementing state and federal education laws, disbursing state and federal funds, holding schools and districts accountable for performance and licensing all educators. The MDE seeks to create a world-class educational system that gives students the knowledge and skills to be successful in college and in the workforce, and to flourish as parents and citizens. To make this vision a reality, all students must be given multiple pathways to success, and teachers and administrators must continue to meet the challenges of this ever-changing landscape of public education. MDE is dedicated to improving the educational opportunities for all students and ensuring a bright future for every child through the Board’s strategic goals that are centered on achievement on every level of Mississippi’s public education system, including districts, schools, classrooms and individual students. The Board has established an ambitious mission and goals for the future of education in Mississippi with the primary objective of ensuring students are prepared for college and career.

  • The U.S. Department of Education is hosting day two of its Regional Convening in Jackson today to support efforts to improve teacher recruitment and retention by increasing teacher pay, promoting educator diversity, and expanding high-quality and affordable pathways into teaching. The event marks the third and final Convening of the Department to support state action to advance education professions. The first convening, held in Albuquerque, New Mexico May 29-30, focused on western states. The second convening, held in Chicago June 13-14, focused on midwestern to northeastern states. Mississippi’s event, held at Jackson State University, focuses on Southern states. In all, 25 states have collaborated at the convenings to learn from each other about best practices to eliminate educator shortages. The convenings are hosted in partnership with The Hunt Institute and TEACH.org. • The State Board of Education (SBE) voted today to request an end to the state of emergency in the Tunica County School District (TCSD) and return the district to local community control. The SBE has governed the TCSD since 2015, when it determined an extreme emergency existed in the district and asked the governor to declare a state of emergency. SBE-appointed interim superintendent Dr. Margie Pulley has led the district since 2015, during which time she implemented high-quality instruction, sound financial management and brought all accreditation standards into compliance. Under Dr. Pulley’s leadership, the district’s accountability grade improved to a C in 2015-16 after a four-year track record of D and F grades. The district further improved its grade to a B in 2021-22 and 2022-23. Get details at bit.ly/3xnsAFn. #MsEdu
