Park and Recreation Director W. Lee Jones is entering his retirement era after 20 years with the County! Since joining us in 2004, he's contributed to several notable projects like First Ward Park, Romare Bearden Park, the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex and the reopening of the American Legion Memorial Stadium. He's been responsible for managing the overall planning and direction of more than 230 parks, 30 facilities and 22,000 acres of parkland. Jones is no stranger to vanguard status. He was the first Black person to receive a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Virginia School of Architecture. Jones was also honored with the 2023 Charlotte’s Men of Change award, which recognizes Black community leaders for their work as business owners, teachers, political and justice activists, trainers, and visionaries. We're grateful for the 20 years Director W. Lee Jones has dedicated to transforming Mecklenburg County and the park and recreation system into what it is today! Cheers to your well-deserved PTO (permanent time off)!

A big congratulations to our Public Health team on being one of three government EQUALibrium Award recipients! “We are very honored to receive this recognition by WFAE,” said Dr. Raynard Washington, Mecklenburg County Public Health director. “Public media is a powerful partner in our work to connect residents to information and resources, as well as uplifting stories of our successes and challenges. Our mission of promoting and protecting the public’s health can only be achieved if we meet our residents where they are. It’s not enough to simply provide services, we must understand and respond to the conditions that make access possible for our residents, even if it means bringing services to them.”
WFAE is proud to announce the winners of its inaugural EQUALibrium Awards. These awards celebrate Charlotte-area residents and institutions that have made outstanding contributions in advancing issues of race and equity within the community. More than 100 nominations were received across seven categories. Winners and nominees will be honored at an awards ceremony on June 27. View the list of winners here: https://buff.ly/4c9bSZ4
