We are thrilled to announce that representatives from Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center recently attended the Alliance for Equity in Cancer Care Annual Meeting in Richmond, VA. This prestigious event was a significant milestone for us, providing a platform to showcase our dedication to advancing health equity and improving cancer care for underserved communities. At the conference, we highlighted our Patient Navigation Program, which offers comprehensive support from diagnosis through survivorship, ensuring culturally responsive and patient-centered care. Our participation allowed us to exchange valuable insights, collaborate with national healthcare leaders, and reinforce our commitment to providing equitable cancer care, particularly in North Baton Rouge. Special thanks to our team for their outstanding presentations and to all the incredible minds we connected with. Meredith shared her expertise and passion for nutrition, showing us how to make healthy blueberry oatmeal breakfast muffins. Blueberries are a powerhouse of antioxidants, fiber, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K, helping to protect our cells and prevent cancer. Life takes unexpected turns. For Mr. Blaise Paul, an engineer at Shell, a cancer diagnosis would go on to reshape his path in profound ways. Despite the challenges, the exceptional care he received at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center guided him through this chapter. From gym sessions with his son to navigating treatment with the help of Dr. Daniel LaVie, Blaise’s story is one of resilience and hope. The unwavering support from his care team and his strong faith helped him through each step. Today, he is in remission and continues to inspire those around him with his journey of faith and healing. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Vera Hendrix and Dr. Celeste Lagarde to the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center team! 👏 Dr. Vera Hendrix, a breast surgical oncologist, graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, completed her general surgery residency at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans and her breast surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. As the only oncology fellowship-trained breast surgeon on the Northshore, Dr. Hendrix is renowned for her clinical expertise and dedication to exceptional patient care. Dr. Celeste Lagarde, a breast surgical oncologist, completed her medical education, residency, and fellowship at Louisiana State University School of Medicine. She served as a Clinical Instructor of Surgery at LSU School of Medicine from 1980 to 1992 and advanced to Assistant Professor of Surgery from 1992 to 1993. Dr. Lagarde is celebrated for her clinical expertise and unwavering commitment to excellence in patient care. We are excited to add Breast Surgery to our services to be able to offer patients more comprehensive cancer care treatment.

Just before Thanksgiving a few years ago, Precious Brown's life changed forever with a diagnosis of Stage IV breast cancer. At just 32, she faced unimaginable challenges. Despite many uncertainties, Precious found strength in her faith, family, and an incredible care team at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at Opelousas General Health System. Her journey was tough, but the support from her oncologist Dr. David Hanson, nurse practitioner Rachel Cunningham, and her loving family made all the difference. With their help, Precious regained her strength and returned to her everyday activities, embracing life with newfound resilience and gratitude.
