We revitalize older and historic commercial districts to build vibrant neighborhoods and thriving economies.
About us
Main Street America is a national leader in economic development and community revitalization in older and historic commercial districts. We help build more sustainable and equitable communities by lifting up the people and places that make Main Streets thrive. The Main Street program was created as a program of the National Trust in 1980 to combat the harmful impacts of sprawl and the changing nature of retail on the physical character and economies of communities. Today’s Main Street programs serve both rural and urban communities, more than 80% of which are located in low-to-moderate income census tracts. Main Street programs are currently in more than 1,200 communities in 45 states. The program has served more than 2,000 communities since its inception. Our two signature programs – Main Street America and UrbanMain – provide direct support to local leaders in small towns, mid-sized cities, and urban neighborhoods.

We are so proud to be able to work with amazing communities like this through the Thriving Communities Program!
The Cher-Ae Heights Indian Community of the Trinidad Rancheria is a federally recognized tribe, situated on 100 acres overlooking the Pacific coast of northern California. The people of Trinidad Rancheria are ancestrally tied to coastal tribes, including Yurok, Wiyot, and Tolowa. Trinidad Rancheria has invested in economic enterprises in the region, including with the Seascape Restaurant and the Heights Casino. The tribe oversaw a full reconstruction of the Trinidad Pier, involving multiple federal agencies to sustainably restore the engine of Trinidad's fishing industry. We visited Trinidad Rancheria in March for a Thriving Communities Program assessment visit - It was amazing to learn about this 'small-but-mighty' tribe that has taken a methodical, strategic approach to impactful projects over the years. We began the trip with a tour of the Rancheria, including multiple areas of neighborhoods, public facilities, and commercial businesses. In focus groups, we spoke with leadership of Trinidad Rancheria's staff departments and council members to learn more about the tribe's accomplishments and continuing challenges. We also engaged with partners in the region, like nearby municipalities, counties, and state agencies. Big thanks to our hosts at Trinidad Rancheria, including Leslie Sanders, Noah Rodriguez, and Amy Atkins-Kelley. Thanks to Mariia Zimmerman at USDOT for joining us to contribute insights, and to my colleagues Magdalena Gillespie (Main Street America), Amy Williams and Verna Al-ag (Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC), and Jose Manuel Almanza (Equiticity) for joining our assessment team.
