Gustav Klimt, born #onthisday in 1862, quickly became known as the foremost portraitist of Vienna's new upper class. Some of his most memorable works included the dazzling portraits of Vienna's leading socialites, like Adele Bloch-Bauer I. These portraits were so labor-intensive that he averaged only one per year after 1900. Each portrait required many sketches (several hundred in the case of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, on which he worked from 1904 to 1907.) Klimt's fine craftsmanship is evident in his use of real gold for a diffuse background, while in contrast, Adele's face stands out as an extraordinarily modern portrayal. Her hands are arranged gracefully to conceal a deformed finger, yet she remains elf-assured introspective, comporting herself as a woman of privilege devoted to the world of the intellect. Born #onthisday in 1884, Amedeo Modigliani's turbulent life often overshadows his legacy. Despite a childhood wrought by sickness and an adulthood plagued by addiction, Modigliani became one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. The artist passed away at age 35, virtually unknown outside of Parisian artist circles, and only achieved fame posthumously.

Happy 87 years young, David Hockney 🎈 British-born artist Hockney's great affection for the city of Los Angeles, his home since the 1960s, is evident in the many works that draw upon its cultural iconography: luxurious swimming pools, sun-drenched landscapes, and handsome young men at play. Painted from memory in just a few weeks, Mulholland Drive: The Road to the Studio (1980), the largest of Hockney's canvases, vividly captures the quintessential Los Angeles activity: driving. --------------- Artwork: David Hockney, Mulholland Drive: The Road to the Studio, 1980, acrylic on canvas, 86 × 243 in., Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Purchased with funds provided by the F.
