The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is turning up its oversight of the supplemental and ancillary benefits offered to Medicare Advantage members. Two recent rulings make it clear that CMS will be closely monitoring how members use these benefits and which insurers aren’t driving sufficient utilization.    This is a HUGE opportunity for health plans. Why is the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (#CMS) pushing Medicare Advantage plans so hard to increase utilization of supplemental benefits? It’s data like this: Up to a third of MA members don’t use ANY of their supplemental benefits like dental and vision, according to a new survey conducted by The Commonwealth Fund. And just 7% of members tapped their hearing benefit, even though half of adults 65+ suffer from hearing loss. Why such low utilization numbers? A quarter of members said they didn’t know what benefits their plans even offered. Clearly, health plans need to do more to educate and activate their members around their benefits.
