If you missed the release of the Proposed 2025 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule this week, the conversion factor is $32.35 - a 2.8% decrease from the 2024 conversation factor used to determine fee schedule prices. In total, payments to pathology services will drop by 2.4%, largely due to ongoing budget neutrality requirements requiring payment cuts that have been delayed by Congressional action in recent years. For example, two common codes, 88305 and G0416 will experience reductions of 3% and 2%, respectively. As College of American Pathologists (CAP) notes in its analysis: "Rather than eliminate, revise, or replace the budget neutrality requirements in Medicare, Congress has instead responded with band-aid short-term relief packages. These packages do not eliminate cuts; they only delay the impact. For 2025, two congressional relief packages will expire resulting in a -2.9% decrease to the conversion factor. This cut continues the downward trend in pathology payments, which have seen an overall decrease of 7.0% since 2021." With all of the ongoing developments surrounding the oversight of laboratory tests and other regulatory changes, it can be difficult for labs to stay on top of their quality and compliance. ✔ But following recent CLIA updates, quality officers and other lab managers must review a number of items to ensure they stay on top of their game. With this in mind, Lighthouse's Anna Dawsey Hill, PhD, NRCC-TC, recently sat down with G2 Intelligence to discuss new quality, proficiency, and CLIA updates and what labs need to be aware of in order to maintain their compliance. While it's a time of transition for the clinical lab space, that doesn't mean there are not ample opportunities available for labs willing to take control of their patient relationships. 👀 By providing patients more visibility into the vital role medical lab professionals play in the diagnostic and decision-making process, labs can improve their seat at the healthcare table and gain more resources in turn. 💡 Thanks again to LabVine for hosting this great event and inviting us to share our insights! #lmss2024 #labortatorymedicine #clinicallaboratory
🔬 Exploring New Possibilities for Clinical Laboratories! 🔬 During his recent presentation at the #LMSS2024, Jon Harol emphasized that the clinical lab industry is at a critical turning point. He explained that the key to shaping the future lies in building and owning a trusted relationship with patients. Whoever holds this relationship will steer the direction of healthcare, deciding how resources are allocated and shared. Historically, labs haven't positioned themselves as leaders in this relationship. But now, we're at a unique juncture where we can change that. Jon Harol asked us to consider this: if laboratories provide 70% of the value in healthcare, how do we convey that importance to patients and help them understand it? By stepping up and engaging directly with patients, labs can ensure that the vital work we do is recognized and valued. It's time for the lab community to take the driver's seat and lead the way in transforming healthcare. ❓ Which of the opportunities listed gets you most excited for the future of the clinical lab industry? #ClinicalLabs #PatientCare #HealthcareInnovation #LabLeaders #FutureOfHealthcare #MedicalLaboratoryScience #LaboratoryProfessionals #ClinicalLaboratory Lighthouse Lab Services

Last week, the CDC issued an advisory warning of an increased risk of #dengue virus (DENV) infections in the US this year. Globally, cases of dengue have been the highest on record for this calendar year and many countries are reporting elevated dengue case numbers. The CDC says the agency is actively implementing several strategies to address the increase in cases of dengue, including expanding laboratory capacity to improve laboratory testing approaches. Follow the links in the comments below to read up on clinical testing guidance for dengue and instructions for submitting specimens for dengue virus tests. #laboratorytesting #CDC #virus

When a lab is considering making the leap from CLIA-Waived to Moderate Complexity testing, we're often asked what key factors should inform that decision. While there are several considerations to weigh depending on the size and scope of your business, here are three that can help initially determine whether transitioning to moderate complexity testing makes sense: 🤝 Volume and Demand - Labs must assess whether their patient volume justifies the investment in moderate complexity testing. Higher volumes will help to provide consistent testing opportunities and make the transition financially viable. ✅ Staff Training and Competency - Do you currently have staff on hand who are qualified to perform the testing you want to add? Will you need to train or add new staff? 🏨 Infrastructure and Financial Planning - In addition to ensuring you have space for your lab, you should conduct a cost-benefit analysis to understand the financial implications, including initial setup costs and ongoing operational expenses versus the potential for increased revenue. Looking to learn more? Check out our full blog for a deep dive on transitioning to moderate complexity testing below! #CLIA #laboratorytesting #clinicallaboratory

Are you spending more than necessary employing a full-time #CLIA Laboratory Director when your lab’s oversight requirements could be met by a part-time individual filling the same role? Let us cut to the chase – a lab can save 80% or more on its lab director costs by employing a part-time director when appropriate! 👀 Through a combination of on-site and remote work, part-time lab directors can fulfill their duties by delegating certain appropriate tasks to full-time on-site staff members such as medical technologists and technical supervisors. Check out the article below for more info on when it makes sense to consider a part-time Lab Director, including insights from our Director of Recruiting and Staffing, Joe Kessler. #medicallaboratory #labdirector #healthcarerecruiting

Recently, the ACLA filed a lawsuit challenging the FDA’s authority to regulate Laboratory Developed Tests as medical devices under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act. In light of this challenge and others that are being considered, do you think the LDT Final Rule will survive in its current form? #LDT #FDA #medicaldevice #laboratorytesting
