❗In the first half of 2024, we noticed an increase in reports from our partners about customers receiving unexpected OTPs. Analysis shows this is related to a specific fraud scenario of Wangiri 2.0. A few years ago, we became the first to identify Wangiri 2.0, a fraud type that exploits telecom company voice services by manipulating call centers and help desks to dial high-rate premium numbers. This specific scenario includes the following characteristics: 🔹 The fraudulent carrier receives only part of the generated traffic and revenue or does not receive any at all. 🔹Monetary gains not received by the fraudulent carrier are collected by MNOs and other carriers in the chain. 🔹End subscribers receive OTPs, delivered as flash calls or text-to-speech calls. Since these OTPs are unsolicited, they are perceived as spam. Wangiri 2.0 is causing increasingly severe reputational damage for MNOs and enterprises. This trend requires immediate action to protect both enterprises and consumers.
