  • We're marking a big milestone for children in our community! We've successfully made more than 500 homes lead-safe through our Lead-Free Families and Green and Healthy Homes programs. This effort is crucial as Lancaster County grapples with one of Pennsylvania's highest rates of elevated blood lead levels, posing a serious health risk to children. Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health spearheads Lead-Free Families, the first U.S. program fully funded and operated by a health system, committing $50 million to ensure community-wide lead hazard identification, remediation, and family support services. The program also oversees the Healthy Homes Program, addressing additional environmental hazards affecting childhood health. For more information or to get involved, contact Lead-Free Families at 717-544-LEAD (5323), email info@leadfreefamilies.org, or visit http://spr.ly/604192Fn1

  • Mallory Redcay, of Lancaster, was once told she would probably never give birth due to a kidney disease diagnosed when she was a child. However, in March, she delivered a healthy baby girl following a kidney transplant at Penn Medicine in Philadelphia. Redcay went through most of the pre- and post-operation examinations at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. http://spr.ly/604192nld

  • To pay tribute to those dedicated to the nursing profession, Jean Banzhof, MSN (top photo, third from left), a Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health clinical documentation manager, co-founded the Lancaster County Nurse Honor Guard Association. This group of 80 current members recently celebrated its fifth anniversary and has performed 184 Nightingale tribute services, a ceremony that honors the contributions of a nurse upon their passing. “Even if you didn’t personally know the nurse you’re honoring, you know their dedication and emotional investment to their career. And knowing that, and honoring that, makes me proud,” Banzhof says.

  • When a patient arrived at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital's Emergency Department, Jessica Rutter, RN, performed a standard assessment of their neurological function. All was normal. When the patient showed some subtle condition changes, she repeated the assessment. Again normal. But Rutter knew something wasn't right. Thanks to her extraordinary assessment skills, persistence, and advocacy, the patient quickly received further testing and the needed emergency care. Congratulations, Jessica, on your well-deserved The DAISY Foundation Award!
