It’s time to Queer 👏 the 👏 bench 👏 The most recent polling shows that 7.6% of the U.S. population is LGBTQ+, but only 2.6% of federal judges openly identify as LGBTQ+. This 5% gap represents a slight increase from last year, according to Lambda Legal’s 2023 judicial nominations report. Put simply—the federal judiciary does not reflect the diverse country it serves. And currently, there are no LGBTQ+ nominees or nominees living with HIV awaiting confirmation. Considering the pressing litigation impacting transgender and nonbinary rights, we need a judiciary that represents us. President Biden and our senators, it’s time to queer the bench! Trans people deserve to be treated with the same dignity and respect that’s given to anyone else. 🗣️ This is the message that Lake—our incredible Digital Content Manager—wants to share with the world. Every day, new efforts are made by lawmakers across the country to legislate trans people out of existence. Politicians and other officials promote offensive and untruthful rhetoric that claims trans people are dangerous, immoral, or confused. The truth is that trans people are just trying to live their lives as their authentic selves. It’s a basic right, and the least we can do for each other. July marks BIPOC Mental Health Month — an important time to focus on the unique strengths and challenges that Black, Indigenous, and people of color face when it comes to mental health. This month honors the memory of Bebe Moore Campbell, an American author, journalist, teacher, and mental health advocate who worked to shed light on the mental health needs of Black and other underrepresented communities. Those disparities compound for those of us who are LGBTQ+ and BIPOC. Since our beginning, Lambda Legal has always been about freedom. The freedom to love who you love, which we won at the Supreme Court in Lawrence v. Texas in 2003. The freedom to marry who you want, which we won at the Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015. And the freedom to be who you are, which we continue to fight for today. But today, our freedom is under attack in America. A wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is sweeping across nearly every state in our country, threatening to roll back a half century of work and our hard-won rights. Once again, Lambda Legal is the last line of defense for our community. This is a dark time. We are in a fight about the fundamental values of our nation. 🗣️ Just a Wednesday reminder that health care should be available to everyone, full stop. Regardless of your age, location, sexual orientation and gender identity, everyone needs and deserves affirming and informed health care. You should be able to make medical decisions with the support of health professionals and loved ones; decisions rooted in science and the full standard of care—not driven by the agendas of politicians. Too many are trying to ban health care for transgender and nonbinary people, with laws that threaten the health and lives of transgender youth and adults alike, and penalize physicians who provide the best standard of care for their transgender patients.
