In 2009 as a first-year, founding teacher under a first-year principal at a new alternative high school in the NYC Department of Education, I made a call to author my own Algebra curriculum in the absence of high quality core math materials. A program like Illustrative Mathematics at my disposal would've saved me a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (and may have given me time to make friends - people like me, I swear).
