We are a national nonprofit that works to end playspace inequity. For good.
About us
KABOOM! works with communities to build incredible, kid-designed playspaces that help give kids in every zip code the opportunity to thrive. Kids who don't have access to play miss out on childhood and are denied critical opportunities to build physical, social and emotional health. For more than two decades, we've teamed up with bold, inspiring partners and community members, starting with the kids themselves, to understand each neighborhood's unique aspirations. Then we build incredible places to play, inspired by their design, courage and leadership. Over the last 23 years, we've built or improved 17,000+ playspaces, engaged more than 1.5 million community members and brought joy to over 11 million kids. As we look to the future, we'll continue our efforts to build collective action and community opportunity, spark hope and enable kids to reach their full potential. And we promise that we won't stop until we put an end to playspace inequity. For good.

We’re thrilled to announce that KABOOM! has teamed up with NBA superstar Jerami Grant and his foundation, Hour Generation, and The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission to build a new playground at Palmer Park in Prince George’s County, MD! Jerami attended high school in Prince George’s County and is committed to providing the community that raised him with information and resources they need to thrive – including new playspaces! This will be the second build with the Hour Generation Foundation and KABOOM!. "As someone who grew up playing basketball in the DMV area, I understand the power of community spaces in shaping young minds and dreams. Partnering with KABOOM! and M-NCPPC to fund a playground build in Landover, MD isn't just about giving back; it's about providing kids with playspaces to thrive and fostering a sense of belonging in environments where children can flourish. By investing in this opportunity, we are not just building structures; we are nurturing joy, promoting health, and sowing the seeds of a brighter future for generations to come.” Thank you, Jeremi for your continued commitment to your community! In the area and want to know how to get involved in this build? Visit https://bit.ly/3VWOgAk and sign-up to volunteer on July 16, 17, or 18. 📸: ©Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission

Kids deserve to learn, play, and grow in buildings that have the capacity to meet those needs. That’s why KABOOM! and our partners at the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation wrote to California State Senator Josh Newman in support of the California Education Bond Bill, which he helped craft, that aims to provide $8.5 billion to strengthen school infrastructure throughout the state. As we celebrate Independence Day, KABOOM! believes that shared civic infrastructure is a cornerstone for a strong, united nation. Whether it’s the town square, public waterfront, a regional trail, city park, playspace, or improved main street, civic infrastructure reflects American values of community and shared prosperity that underpin a thriving democratic society. Learn how federal legislators are prioritizing investments in gathering spaces in communities across the nation in this new article from the Percent for Place coalition, of which KABOOM! is a part of. https://lnkd.in/enwBMvkY #Percent4Place #CivicInfrastructure #IndependenceDay

Thank you to the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation for supporting the MLA Sherman Schoolyard Build with Oakland Unified School District, Workday, and Kaiser Permanente! This transformation includes the addition of a new kid-designed playground, multi-sport court, mini-soccer pitch, three nature exploration and garden areas, murals, a Little Town Library, and more. We’re working with our partners to bring #PlayspaceEquity to Oakland. With this schoolyard transformation, we’ve built four new playspaces in Oakland in 2024, and have four more left to build before the end of the year! #EatLearnPlay 📸: Mike Rasay

What happened when the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation teamed up with The Skatepark Project and KABOOM! to launch #BuiltToPlay? More than 90 playspaces and skateparks have been created across Western New York and Southeast Michigan since 2018, thanks to community partnerships, expert support, and a catalytic Foundation investment. Through a Gehl-led study, you can now dive into the findings of how 'Built to Play' reshaped lives for kids and communities. Review and download a mix of resources and case studies that can support any advocate, civic leader, or funder to advance access to play. Early Learning Nation asked leaders and experts, including KABOOM! CEO Lysa Ratliff, how parents and caregivers can make this summer a playful learning summer. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/ehxhtZDp.
What's your summer parenting/caregiver strategy to keep those young brains thriving? “This summer, embrace outdoor play and nature as a vehicle for learning, whether that’s a trip to a local playground, a box of sidewalk chalk or a playful walk in the sunshine. Parents and caregivers can also raise their voices and advocate for equitable play spaces in their community so every kid can get the benefits of playful learning.” —Lysa Ratliff, CEO, KABOOM!
