Measuring what matters.
About us
The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent global health research center at the University of Washington that provides rigorous and comparable measurement of the world's most important health problems and evaluates the strategies used to address them. IHME makes this information freely available so that policymakers have the evidence they need to make informed decisions about how to allocate resources to best improve population health. Our mission is to improve the health of the world’s populations by providing the best information on population health.

"Birthrates are falling fast across countries, with economic, social and geopolitical consequences," writes The Wall Street Journal. Due to this, interest in introducing pronatalist policies has risen, though IHME finds "little evidence that [it] leads to sustained rebounds in fertility." "Researchers say a woman may get pregnant sooner to capture a baby bonus, but likely won’t have more kids over her lifetime."

Between 2000 and 2019, cirrhosis mortality rates increased in nearly all counties among White (97% of 3051 counties) and American Indian and Alaska Native (89% of 474) populations and decreased in many counties for the Asian, Black, and Latino populations. Our new study highlights these ongoing racial disparities, stressing the urgency for targeted interventions to mitigate cirrhosis. Explore the findings: http://ms.spr.ly/6048lzXrg

Knowledge sharing: beginning in 2019, IHME and Aga Khan University have been collaborating to generate scientific health evidence that examines health metrics from 1990 to 2019. Findings from this partnership include: • 65.9 years – average life expectancy in Pakistan in 2019, a nearly 5-year increase from 1990 • 54% increase – in the gap in SDI between the highest and lowest SDI provinces in Pakistan occurred from 1990 to 2019, demonstrating persistent inequities within the country •21% of all health loss – was due to low birth weight, short gestation, representing the leading contributor to disease burden in Pakistan in 2019 Check out the findings and learn about this partnership »http://ms.spr.ly/6046YcC0j

Preparing for a future of vaccine misinformation and hesitancy: why it’s more important now than ever before to build trust and confidence in mRNA vaccines, writes Heidi J Larson, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London and Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Vaccine Insights. mRNA vaccines received wide global attention in 2020 for protecting against COVID-19, but their novelty, combined with emergency authorization to allow quick access to the new vaccines, gave rise to public anxiety. New study findings highlight a clear link between the mRNA vaccine's perceived novelty and vaccine hesitancy levels.

The jury is still out on whether low to moderate alcohol consumption can help decrease the risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD). 🍺 🫀 Commentary from researchers Sinclair Carr at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Dr. Susan A. McLaughlin at IHME suggests further research with various methods to better understand the relationship between alcohol and IHD. Their recent study on this topic used newly developed Burden of Proof methods. Exploring the Financing Global Health 2023 report by health focus area: #Malaria http://ms.spr.ly/6043YQPqR New report examines trends in development assistance for malaria, noting a rebound to $3.3 billion in 2023—significant growth from the 17.9% decrease in assistance in 2017 and 2018. Much of this assistance is channeled through the Global Fund, non-governmental organizations, and the US government. A notable finding from the new Financing Global Health report: Western sub-Saharan Africa has the highest burden from malaria globally BUT other African regions received more development assistance for malaria per person Check out the entire FGH report ➡http://ms.spr.ly/6044YQPqr Interact with the updated data tool ➡http://ms.spr.ly/6047YQPqV

Cases of gout—an inflammatory arthritis that can lead to reduced mobility and impaired function—continue to rise. New future projections indicate a 70% increase from 55.8M individuals with gout in 2020 to 95.8M in 2050, primarily due to population growth and aging, finds new #GBD2021 study. Males are at higher risk of premature death than females, but females tend to spend more of their lifetime in poor health, according to an IHME study published in The Lancet. IHME's Senior author Luisa Flor stressed the timeliness of the study, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic's profound impact on health outcomes, writes The Times Of India | Indiatimes
