In 2021, the National Academy of Medicine released their study charting a path of change for the nursing industry over the next decade. The goal of this study is to provide guidance and leadership for practicing healthcare professionals so that nurses can help bridge disparities in America surrounding health equity and health care equity. The study views nurses as the middle man when it comes to the health crisis and a vital factor in making improvements. Nurses are in a unique position to affect change at both the individual and structural level in the social sphere, as well as, the medical sphere. However, this role won’t be without its challenges and changes. Some predicted changes the NAM expects to see over the coming years: - A continuous need for more nurses! As the aging population grows to unprecedented numbers and we continue to see a shortage of physicians, especially in primary care, mental health, and gerontology, nurses will be more in-demand to see the growing needs of the population. - Reduced restrictions on the tasks nurses can perform. As of 2021, 23 states had already allowed full practice ability for NPs, however it is predicted that more states will need to join them in order to keep pace with the health care needs of the nation. - Increased integration of equity, public health, and social determinants of health into the nursing school curriculum at the graduate and undergraduate levels. This should help ensure that nurses are more prepared to efficiently handle the day-to-day challenges that face them while working with the public. - Increased value of school and public health nurses through additional funding to close the pay gap between these nurses and other roles in the nursing industry. Overall, we’d say that the predictions in this study are aligned with the feedback we hear from nurses regularly. They also cover some of the larger issues at play stem from demographics and other disparities that nurses and their patients often face. How do you think the nursing industry is performing in 2024 based on these predictions? We’re almost half way through he decade, do you see these concepts being implemented?
