Our custodial team are rockstars! And we want to give them a HUGE shoutout today on National Custodian Day!! They don’t get nearly enough recognition for the hard work they do. Did you know that Highlands County has more than 40 facilities, including the courthouse, 15 fire stations, three libraries, various government buildings and the Multi-Sports Complex? Our 14 custodians work hard every single day to provide a clean, safe, and productive environment for those who work and visit those facilities.

Help us congratulate one of our own, Battalion Chief Karin Richardson! Last night she, along with three other Fire Rescue members, were honored as award finalists at the Highlands News-Sun Highlander Awards ceremony. And we are happy to say that Battalion Chief Richardson won the EMT/Paramedic of the Year Highlander Award. We are so proud of her. Karin has been with the Highlands County Board for over 25 years. She is a SWAT medic with Highlands County Sheriff's Office, , and in early August she completed her wildland firefighter certification at South Florida State College. In February, Karin became the first female battalion chief in Fire Rescue’s history. Please drop a congratulations below for Karin! We also want to recognize the first responders who won awards last night: • Law Enforcement Officer of the Year – Sheriff Paul Blackman • Firefighter of the Year – Sebring Firefighters Dillon Hathaway and Clayton Waldron Congratulations to all of them, and to the finalists in those categories, including our own Deputy Chief Kelly Duppenthaler, Paramedic Jay Peralta, and Lt. Luis Rodriguez, along with Highlands County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mike Ahrens, and Sebring Police Department Lt. Mike Cutolo.
