Steve Cabella has been amassing Herman Miller vintage for decades. He has decked out his house (a William Wurster-designed home on the edge of the San Francisco Bay in Point Richmond) in midcentury gems from his personal archive: Eames, Nelson, Girard. His reverence for the designers is palpable, for the products unequivocal. “Authenticity is a kind of respect,” Cabella says. Get to know Cabella and see his home at Ideas magazine. Hurra! Fuld Nesting Chair, designed by Munich-based Stefan Diez, just won the prestigious "Red Dot: Best of the Best" Red Dot Design Award for Product Design—the international design competition’s top distinction within the office chairs category. Forty international experts tested and evaluated each entry individually, scoring designs on four qualities: function, aesthetic, ease of use, and responsibility. Introduced in 2023, Fuld has a sleek, minimalist design and pioneering one-piece construction where the back rest, arms and back legs are one continuous piece. In celebration of the achievement, Fuld Nesting Chair will be on display at Red Dot Design Museum Essen and featured in the Red Dot Design Yearbook. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/giv_UGYM

Fifty years ago today (during NeoCon’s sixth year), Herman Miller introduced a revolutionary concept in office furniture: Chadwick Modular Seating. Free from the constraints of straight walls, in-the-way columns, and linear space planning, this modular system offered a range of dramatic planning possibilities. Designer Don Chadwick—37 at the time and on the precipice of a storied partnership with Herman Miller—brought a new perspective to the brand through material and technological innovation, and his first design for Herman Miller is as relevant today as it was a half-century ago. You may have seen it at Design Days in Chicago this week, or in the pages of Ideas magazine to celebrate the anniversary. Kindah Khalidy’s painting studio in Berkeley, California is surprisingly minimalist, given the vibrant, multi-textured art she creates there. The painting studio is her refuge, the place where she can control the playful alchemy that’s a big part of her work. Designer Don Chadwick credits his early curiosity with materials to a childhood interest in mechanics, which dovetailed with a UCLA industrial design education. Following five years in Victor Gruen’s architecture office, Chadwick started his own practice in 1964—centered in Los Angeles, where he grew up and still lives today. In the early 1970s, he met Bob Blaich, former vice president of design at Herman Miller. Blaich brought Chadwick to Herman Miller for his “deep interest in new materials and processes” and in 1974, Chadwick Modular Seating launched, made from injection-molded foam. He was then paired with another new design talent, Bill Stumpf, to rethink the office cubicle. While that project never came to light, their partnership blossomed. Herman Miller introduced Equa Chair in 1984 and then a decade later, Aeron. “Design must understand the rapid pace of technological innovation and use these new tools for building a better and more equitable future for the next generations.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gmpbf3Qc Photos courtesy of Laure Joliet and Herman Miller Archives.
