We are proud to showcase the talent within the HNP DevHub, which recently held its second DataViz Pitch-A-Thon for data and graphics journalists across our division.

VP, Content Strategy | Hearst DevHub Founder | Building Tools and Teams to Empower Local Newsrooms

There's a lot of talent in these 25 rectangles. The Hearst DevHub recently held its second DataViz Pitch-A-Thon for data+graphics journalists across Hearst Newspapers, and the teams' ideas blew away the judges. 💥 Led by Danielle Rindler and Alexandra Kanik, the team convened 30 journalists from the San Francisco Chronicle, Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Express-News, (Albany) Times Union and Hearst Connecticut Media Group to brainstorm and develop cross-market data, graphics and interactive story ideas and have them voted on by a panel of judges. The ultimate goal: Get brainy folks from our newsrooms to come together, share new ideas and build a support network beyond their own teams. Our hope is that this event and other touch points can help build a foundation for greater collaboration, as well as more in-depth and innovative journalism. Now the teams will come together to get the winning idea - and hopefully a few others - published for our #localnews readers. 👏👏👏

Kudos to the team, led by Andrew Williams and Maren Kranking, along with Director of Visual Storytelling Danielle Rindler, who worked tirelessly to update and refine this tool. Last night we held our annual San Antonio Express-News Prep Sports Awards. We recognized 35 outstanding boys and girls athletes, including our inclusion athletes. Patrick P.Hill was our outstanding MC. He kept the 300+ entertained and the program moving. Huge shout out to Spurs Sports & Entertainment point guard, Trey Jones for handing out every award! Those athletes will never forget that. The Express-News has been covering San Antonio area high schools for 150. As I opened the awards program, I quipped, “we are the OG of content creators.” It received a rounds of applause. Proud of the kids, their parents and coaches. I am equally proud of Sara Bryant and her marketing team and our Sports team, especially David Hinojosa, Jeff Perkins and Ronald H. for their tireless coverage of these amazing kids. Local journalism matters and it is easy to support. Simply subscribe to your local paper. 🙏🏼
