Donald Amato has been in our hospital for over a month, coming to us for an orthopedic procedure that required him to stay non-weight bearing for a period of time. He is currently going through progressive orthopedic-rehab with Alissa and Max by his side - and today they helped him experience sunshine therapy. “Woooh! I’m so happy to see him outdoors,” said Donald’s wife Sue Amato. “It’s so refreshing for him. The care has been great and he even enjoys the food! Everyone has gone above and beyond.” For Donald, he says, “The people here (at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital) are fantastic. So caring to bring me out here. The respect shown to me as a patient is over and above kindness and thoughtfulness. Everything has just been fantastic.” Donald said that he enjoys the shade, so parking his wheelchair in a shady spot made for a perfect day for him and his wife Sue. 82-year old Arthur Sherman broke into tears when he saw nurse Rachel Alsobrook and her team on 2 Central singing happy birthday to him with balloons in tow. Arthur lost close family members all before their 81st birthday, so making it to 82 was a critical milestone. "Nobody cares like family like your staff does. They're all my Memorial Angels." Arthur came to us for chest and heart related pain and feared the worst...that he wouldn't make his 82nd birthday, so this was a real meaningful celebration, "The nurses here were so great - it's like being touched by medicine when the balloons came in." "Everyone was so compassionate. So kind. The attention to detail from everyone from the janitor, food folks, doctors and nurses was amazing. And, I loved that all the doctors huddled by me and spoke as a group to keep me and my wife Alice informed from treatment to medications." "When I leave hospital, I am going to retire from my welding fabrication business after 43 years! I'm going to treasure spending my time with my great, great grandkids and do some traveling." Heat-related illnesses can be fatal if not treated quickly. With temperatures feeling like triple digits, it can be dangerous. Here are a few precautions you can take to stay safe and keep cool: 1. Hydrate regularly - Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid sugary or alcoholic drinks that can dehydrate you. 2. Dress smart - Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing to help your body stay cool. 3. Limit outdoor activities - If possible, stay indoors during peak heat hours (10 AM - 4 PM). If you need to be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade. 4. Use sunscreen - Protect your skin from harmful UV rays with a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30. 5. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, such as dizziness, nausea, headache, faintness, and muscle cramps. Sheronn Ervin was eager to enjoy a little time away from her hospital room saying she has spent, “too darn long indoors” for her liking. A cardiology patient, Sheronn turned to her therapy tech, Taylor and her occupational therapist Caitlyn, for a little help to spend time in our hospital’s courtyard for some sunshine therapy. “She’s a very independent patient, but today she had to lean on us…just a little,” said Caitlyn. "I can see how taking in the fresh outdoors has made Sheronn’s day." Sheronn happily began sharing videos on her phone of her power washing her home, and how she can’t wait to start back up on her household projects - once she is discharged. Retired firefighter from Waycross, GA, Donnie Griffis is celebrating life this Fourth of July with his family and grandkids! Donnie had extreme back pain, and was flown from HCA's Memorial Satilla Hospital in Waycross to HCA Florida Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, where our Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) immediately identified a blood clot. Donnie was told his blood clot causing all his pain was about 8 inches long when removed by interventional cardiologist, Dr. Mohannad Bisharat, and his lifesaving PERT team.
